Senior In-House Supervisory Attorney – Insurance Defense

Location: Mount Prospect, IL - Relocation Assistance Available

Salary: $180,000 – $220,000 annually (based on experience)

American Freedom Insurance Company (AFIC), a growing, A+ (Superior) rated non-standard automobile insurer, is seeking a seasoned legal professional to join our in-house Legal and Claim Defense Department in a senior capacity. This role will focus on effectively overseeing, negotiating and processing attorney represented losses and adhering to excess loss prevention strategies.

As AFIC expands in new markets, we are looking for an attorney who thrives in a collaborative environment and has extensive negotiating, coverage and excess loss avoidance experience.

Your Responsibilities

• Manage litigation in multiple jurisdictions.
• Deliver thorough and timely coverage opinions, liability evaluations, and litigation assessments and pursue favorable settlements with plaintiff’s attorneys in a high-volume operation.
• Initiate internal reviews of complex claims, pre-litigation and litigation losses with a focus on securing favorable settlements that minimize loss and defense costs.
• Strategically and efficiently manage legal risk on auto claims.
• Work cross-functionally with Claims and Leadership to align legal strategies with business objectives.
• Develop and enforce best practices for excess loss mitigation, including monitoring of policy limits and out of state claims.
• Respond to time-limited demands and other high-risk scenarios timely and appropriately.
• Provide mentorship and oversight to junior legal department staff.
• Engage, advise and manage outside counsel in a multijurisdictional environment.
• Stay abreast of regulatory, judicial and legal trends impacting bad faith litigation and claims-handling standards.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
• Minimum 7 years of experience in insurance defense, coverage counsel, or related litigation – auto and claim department experience.
• Experience effectively managing workflow processes and supervising others.
• Proven good judgment in efficiently managing and negotiating numerous concerning claims and directing outside legal counsel and appropriate strategies.
• Demonstrated success preventing excess loss exposure.
• Exceptional legal judgment, negotiation skills, and attention to detail.
• Deep understanding of claim dynamics and litigation strategies.
• Proven ability to initiate regular communication with management on all related legal loss topics including successfully explaining complex legal strategies to non-legal stakeholders.
• Experience effectively managing outside counsel and internal legal processes.
• Strong technical writing and policy interpretation skills.
