NOW HIRING : Full-time Greenhouse Assistant

Location: Urbana, Illinois

Start date: Approximately Mid-March

Season: Part to full-time March-October; hours potentially available November-February

Hourly wage: The starting wage is $16-17 per hour depending on experience. Along with financial compensation, crew has access to fresh produce throughout the season.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

We seek a Greenhouse Assistant for our not-for-profit community vegetable farm. This position would work under leadership of the Farm Manager and Assistant Farm Manager/Greenhouse and Transplant Lead and work closely with the rest of the leadership team to help produce high quality starts for our farm, annual plant sales, special events, and donation to school and community gardens.

• Assist management of greenhouse transplant production for year-round on-farm succession planting, plant sales and donation to food access partners;
• Stay on schedule for seed starting and assist in making decisions on plan adjustments;
• Co-manage records of planting placement and timing, equipment maintenance and all other records necessary to the greenhouse operations ;
• Co-manage greenhouse(s), cold frame(s) and germination chamber(s) conditions for proper start production;
• Co-manage inventory and care of greenhouse supplies and seeds;
• Co-manage nutrient and pest needs of starts to insure ample growth;
• Co-oversight and co-management of seasonal staff, volunteers, seasonal interns, as directed by Farm Manager and Assistant Farm Manager;
• Support other leads in completing tasks on other areas of the farm as needed and prioritized by leadership team;
• Assist in weekend farm management and volunteer work days approximately twice per month;
• Assist in promotion of the farm at markets, farm activities, and community events;
• Assist in the organization of plants during the spring and fall plant sale;
• Perform others duties as assigned.

• Valid driver's license with clean driving record;
• History working for other vegetable farms following organic practices;
• Promptly and accurately complete tasks;
• Strong attention to detail;
• Work on repetitive tasks for a large portion of the shift;
• Maintain a positive attitude and work-ethic during difficult or monotonous tasks;
• Work in varied environments, including rain, snow, heat, cold and wind;
• Regularly lift 20-30 lbs and occasionally lift 40 lbs;
• Regularly work for the whole shift on your feet on hard surfaces.

We are a community mission-based farm started by St. Matthew Lutheran Church, dedicated to making healthy food accessible for all by nurturing productive land and cultivating diverse, inclusive communities.
