Biostatistician / clinical epidemiologist - research associate professor

Description

This Department of Population Science and Policy based position will provide expertise in

database creation and maintenance, computer and statistical programming, study design and

advanced statistical methodologies for population science-based research and programs at SIU

School of Medicine. Biostatistical/Bioinformatic support is needed within the Population Science

and Policy Data Analytics Unit with a focus on quantitative, epidemiologic and outcomes

research at clinical and population scales, including big data analysis.

Major areas of focus include: 1) acquisition, mastery and analysis of the state of Illinois

Medicaid database, 2) acquisition and analysis of other large publicly available databases (eg,

NHANES, BRFSS, etc.), 3) the creation of a data warehouse from the SIU electronic health

records, 4) undertaking advanced analyses of the ambulatory clinic data in the SIU data

warehouse, 5) obtaining service agreements to undertake well-defined analyses of various

datasets, and 6) supporting and/or leading the development of grants to be submitted for

extramural funding.

The Data Analytics Unit within PSP conducts high quality scholarly work and supports PSP and

SIUSOM mission areas to advance health in the region. Activities broadly include facilitation of

data acquisition using novel data streams and integration across scales as well as quantitative

research with large existing datasets related to better understanding and/or improving rural/small

town health. Accordingly, this position requires strong quantitative skills and demonstrated

ability to acquire, prepare and expertly analyze very large datasets with state-of-the-art statistical

methodologies. Also, a demonstrated proficiency in synthesizing analyses and communicating

results to the scientific community and community stakeholders will be needed. The ability to

work effectively on a team of other professionals and staff to accomplish these goals is an

absolute imperative.

Examples of Duties

I. Administration 5%

  • Assists the Chair and Vice Chair of the Department of Population Science and Policy


with research program development and administration, research strategic planning and

implementation.

  • Participates in staff and specific research project team meetings as appropriate.


II. Research/Scholarly Activity 40%

  • Contributes unique scientific and research expertise to other faculty research as


appropriate.

  • Submits and obtains research grants as the lead or primary investigator as well as a


collaborating or co-investigator

  • Submits and publishes peer reviewed data and other authoritative works as first author as


well as with other faculty and trainee collaborators.

  • Develops protocols and proposals for study methodology and data analyses. Additionally,


writes the interpretation of data findings in the context of ongoing research objectives.

  • Provides knowledge and insight for new study ideas and long-term goals and objectives


relevant to PSP initiatives.

  • Reviews and remains current with technical and scientific literature in epidemiology and


study outcomes of interest.

  • Cultivate and develop strong collaborations within as well as outside of the PSP


Department both at as well as beyond the SIU campus

III. Teaching 15%

  • Mentors and instructs other personnel (i.e., faculty researchers, technicians, residents,


medical students, nurses, data entry personnel, statisticians, etc.) in public and population

health and/or research methods.

  • Periodically deliver educational conferences at the PSP Grand Rounds series.
  • Identifies new material, faculty, and facilities in order to teach statistical and


epidemiological topics to students or staff as appropriate.

  • Provide high-level teaching to the nascent Master of Science in Population Science


degree program

  • Provide teaching of research methodology and population sciences to trainees, likely


from multiple disciplines, in venues beyond the Master of Science in Population Science

degree program

IV. Service 40%

  • Participate in departmental, medical school, and university as well as professional


organization and community partner committees

  • Performs and helps interpret statistical analyses using SAS, SPSS, Stata, or R including


logistic regression, general linear models with repeated measures, survival analyses, and

other statistical techniques for longitudinal and missing data.

  • Provides specialized expertise in management, manipulation and analysis of large and


complex registries and other population-based databases to facilitate their utility in the

conduct of research.

  • Contributes unique scientific and research expertise to faculty and trainee research as


appropriate.

  • Provides biostatistical and bioinformatics support for study design, implementation, and


analyses of population science-based investigations, studies, or screening programs

  • Provides support for on-going efforts to leverage electronic health record data in research


through data warehousing and integration with other data sources (e.g., census data).

  • Merges numerous, large data files to compile comprehensive datasets for studies


according to study methodology.

  • Validates the relevance of data and information sources within and outside the public


health system.

  • Offer opportunities for trainees to collaborate with our team on research projects that we


have prioritized

  • Lead or participate in the development of white papers emanating from our analyses of


large data-sets

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in biostatistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, health services research, or related


field or M.D./D.O./D.N.P. combined with at least a master’s in biostatistics,

epidemiology, bioinformatics, computer science or health services research.

  • Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority and rural/small town populations.
  • Proficient in multiple methodological areas, including data imputation, cumulative and


Cox hazards modeling, survival analysis, structural equation modeling, linear mixed

models, generalized estimating equations, the development and validation of prediction

models, and non-parametric methodologies.

  • Demonstrable experience in state-of-the-art approaches to data acquisition and analysis of


longitudinal clinical datasets as well as large public use epidemiological datasets such as

NHANES.

  • Demonstrated competence with syntax and programming in at least one statistical


software (e.g., SAS, STATA, R, SPSS).

Desired Qualifications

  • Two-years post-doctoral training appropriate to their area of specialization
  • Experience working on NIH funded grants such as R21, R03 or R01.
  • Record of methodological and statistical contributions to peer-reviewed articles.
  • Experience with relational database development, management, and querying using SQL


or similar tools.

  • Proficient in machine learning, Bayesian statistics, predictive modeling and at least one


computer language (Python, PHP)

  • Experience with state of the art methods for analyzing big data is highly desirable.
  • Above average to excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A proven track record of working effectively on teams inclusive of diverse individuals


with varying research experience and backgrounds.

Supplemental Information

The budgeted annual salary range is $110,000 to $122,100. The final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, and budget constraints. Additional incentive compensation may also be available for clinical work performed beyond the standard scope of responsibilities.
