Resident Care Specialist/C.N.A. - NIGHTS

Position Summary:
Direct resident care in a manner to safely meet resident needs in compliance with federal, state, local, and corporate requirements. Work as a team member with all staff to create a calm and conducive atmosphere to assure residents receive the care they want. This person must be trustworthy, be able to work independently and at times without direct supervision. This person must be able to make decisions regarding emergency needs of the resident and to be depended upon to contact supervisor for advice and direction. Personal care includes, but is not limited to assistance with meals, dressing, movement, and bathing.

Primary Job Responsibilities:

  1. Function as a part of the interdisciplinary team to provide quality care to all residents.
  2. Foster self-respect and a feeling of worth in each resident by consistent kindness, understanding, and patience in their care.
  3. Follow AIDET in interactions with residents.
  4. Respects residents’ rights by knocking on doors before entering, addressing them by name with the appropriate title, and allowing/encouraging them to make their own decisions when appropriate.
  5. Consistently work cooperatively with residents, staff, volunteers, and families to ensure residents are receiving the best quality care and customer service.
  6. Provide personal care to enhance resident function and well-being as needed i.e. bathing, toileting, dressing, providing nutritional meals, and housekeeping services.
  7. Housekeeping –perform all housekeeping procedures in a timely manner:

Ensure all rooms are kept clean, odor free and presentable.

Empty trash in room during every shift

Use proper care of equipment and waste disposal procedures in accordance with facility policies and procedures.

Follow safety data sheets (SDS) in observing waste disposal procedures and safe use of all cleaning products.

Empty trash in common rooms nightly and as needed.

Vacuum common spaces per facility schedule and as needed.

Sweep Dining room after meals and as needed.

Mop Dining Room per facility schedule and as needed to maintain cleanliness.

Clean Public Restroom per facility schedule and as needed to maintain cleanliness.

8. Nutritional services-provide healthy, attractive meal service.

Preparation of basic meals if appropriate certification and assist with set up of tables, serving and clean up.

Maintain dietary equipment in a safe, sanitary manner.

Provide temporary delivery of meals to apartments for sick days.

9. Laundry services-assist resident with laundry per resident preference.

Day and evening shifts gather dirty laundry and distribute clean laundry.

Night shift wash and fold laundry.

10. Follow written and oral directions as given by supervisor.

11. As noted in the resident service plans, assist with medication self-administration by providing reminders or assist in opening containers.

12. Organize and maintain all records necessary.

13. Maintain the confidentiality of all protected health information whether electronic, written, or oral exposed to either during the course of assigned duties or as a result of an incidental disclosure.

14. Activities: Assist with daily activities program AND special events and ensure resident involvement.

15. Attend and participate in continuing education programs designed to keep abreast of changes in the profession and all required in-service training.

16. Observe all facility policies and procedures, including but not limited to safety, infection control, resident rights, and those contained in the employee handbook.

17. Attend and participate in continuing education programs designed to keep abreast of changes in the profession.

18. Participate in in-service training classes as required.

19. Staff training:

A. All staff members must receive, in addition to the training required in Section 295.3020, four hours of dementia-specific orientation prior to assuming job responsibilities without direct supervision within the Alzheimer’s/dementia program. Training must cover, at a minimum, the following topics:

basic information about the causes, progression, and management of Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementia disorders;

techniques for creating an environment that minimizes challenging behavior;

identifying and alleviating safety risks to residents with Alzheimer’s disease;

techniques for successful communication with individuals with dementia; and

residents’ rights.

B. Direct care staff must receive 16 hours of on-the-job supervision and training within the first 16 hours of employment following orientation. Training must cover:

encouraging independence in and providing assistance with the activities of daily living;

emergency and evacuation procedures specific to the dementia population;

techniques for creating an environment that minimizes challenging behaviors;

resident rights and choice for persons with dementia, working with families, caregiver stress;

techniques for successful communication.

C. Direct care staff must annually complete 12 hours of in-service education regarding Alzheimer’s disease and other related dementia disorders. Topics may include:

assessing resident capabilities and developing and implementing service plans;

promoting resident dignity, independence, individuality, privacy and choice;

planning and facilitating activities appropriate for the dementia resident;

communicating with families and other persons interested in the resident;

resident rights and principles of self-determination;

care of elderly persons with physical, cognitive, behavioral and social disabilities;

medical and social needs of the resident;

common psychotropics and side effects;

local community resources; and

other related issues.

Required Qualifications

  1. 18 years of age or older
  2. Pass background checks before and during employment
  3. Care giving experience
  4. Food Sanitation Certificate (or obtain within three months of hire)
  5. CPR certification (or obtain within one month of hire)
  6. Active (or eligible to renew) CNA license (or pass the class with intention of completing the state competency test within four months)

Required Pertinent Skills:

  1. A strong desire to serve the elderly and provide excellent customer service.
  2. Able to follow written and oral directions.
  3. Ability to work independently.
  4. Possess the ability to communicate effectively and deal tactfully with personnel, residents, families, and visitors.

Physical and Environmental Demands:

  1. Frequently: Works in well lighted/ventilated work areas.
  2. Frequently: Moderate physical effort (lift/carry 25 pounds).
  3. Occasionally: Prolonged sitting, standing, bending, lifting, moving, climbing.
  4. Regularly: Pushing carts and wheelchairs to transport residents.
  5. Regularly: Contact with residents’ families, personnel, and visitors under all conditions and
    circumstances.
  6. Occasionally: At times subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents and/or family members.
  7. Regularly: Subject to frequent interruptions.
  8. Occasionally: Irregular working hours and in other positions temporarily when necessary.
  9. Rarely: Subject to falls, burns from equipment.
  10. Rarely: Subject to infectious diseases.
