Description:

Purpose:

A custodian, or janitor, is responsible for cleaning, and maintaining the health and safety standards of, a residential or commercial building. He may also be required to make basic repairs to the facility. He typically works alone. However, cameras are operating 24 hours a day and are located in every aspect of the building.

Responsibilities:

1. Maintains inventory by submitting a written report/request of the supplies and possible testing of new supplies of the equipment.
2. Keeps entire building clean at all times using only required cleaners following the Area, Product and Procedure method for each area as stated in this job description.
3. Responds to service requests requesting the setup of furniture for community events organized by the company.
4. Uses gloves and masks to clean with cleaning products at all times
5. Chemicals and equipment approved and required by TCI listed in job description and checklists
6. Cleans all hazardous waste promptly and effectively utilizing proper procedure.
7. Uses a clipboard at all times to check off daily tasks as completed.
8. All other duties as requested by management to improve the appearance of the facility.

Professional Requirements :

Custodians are expected to have a various number of skills and abilities rather than educational qualifications. It is these skills which would help him to perform his duties as part of his profession helping the candidate to grow to higher levels and also in terms of remuneration package. Following are the skills and abilities required to be a custodian:

• Ability to withstand long working hours: Custodians must be willingly perform unpleasant cleaning tasks by spending long hours standing, lifting and pushing heavy power equipment in addition to bending and squatting. They must develop the ability to work in a noisy environment around equipment as well.
• Ability to work in a team: These professionals work coordinating with various other departments of the organization. They should have the ability to work cooperating relationships with other professional by demonstrating sensitivity and respect in a diverse population.
• Ability to work with hazardous materials: Custodians must have considerate knowledge while working with pesticides as they are hazardous materials. They should be able to identify on how to use dangerous chemicals by safely disposing them off with the help of manual or power equipment.
• Organizational Skills: These professionals are vested with a number of tasks which may be maintenance or supervision activities. As such, they should have the ability to properly schedule their activities by prioritizing their duty according to the importance of the task. They should effectively and smoothly complete their duties within the allocated time.
• Reasonable knowledge of maintenance and preserving variety chemical substances.
• Ability to work under supervision.
• Ability to make decisions and problem solving skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to be flexible and possess cultural awareness

Working Conditions:

• Physical Effort: Mental/visual stress related to viewing of computer screens and printed material for prolonged periods. Lifting limited to a box of forms weighing 7-8 pounds. Prolonged periods of sitting. May experience stress related to productivity requirements.
• Work Environment: Normal office environment with limited exposure to health or accident hazards. Note: We are a therapeutic residential treatment facility and at times, it can be noisy and stressful. This position has no interactions with youth.
• Equipment Used: Computer, telephone, printer, calculator, fax machine, and copy reproduction equipment

Physical Elements Required:

• Lifting and carrying 5-7 pounds, be without physical limitation that would impair ability to fulfill the functions of the position. Must have sufficient mobility, physical stamina to travel all over facility and to participate in a therapeutic crisis intervention full, prone restraint.
• Frequent bending, stooping kneeling, and reaching, stretching;
• Standing for long periods of time;
• Work requires the ability to work both indoors and outdoors

• Must be without emotional limitations that would impair ability to fulfill the functions of this job including freedom from substance abuse.
