Undergraduate Engagement Coordinator - Engineering Administration
- Support development and operations of WYSE summer programs, ensuring curriculum and experience is aligned with College and Departmental goals, especially as it relates to undergraduate experiential learning, early introductions to evolving research areas, and student recruitment goals.
- Assist with coordination of Grainger Engineering summer programs, including Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering (WYSE) summer camps, Young Scholars Summer STEMM Research program, and programming offered in partnership with community organizations. This includes some work outside of the standard office hours, including weekends.
- Recruit, train, and manage faculty, staff, and students to actively participate in Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering engagement programs in both Champaign-Urbana and Chicago.
- Train and direct permanent staff plus a large temporary staff who serve as counselors, coordinators, mentors, and facilitators.
- Identify student staffing needs; recruit and select staff, assign, and coordinate their work, train, and manage their performance. Work with student employees to set career development goals and to recognize how their growth in this position contributes to their competitiveness with future employment searches and review committees.
- Liaise with Grainger faculty and staff and the UIUC College of Education to facilitate curriculum development and review for summer camps and other outreach initiatives. Identify opportunities to multi-purpose camp content for broader use and reach.
- Contribute to outreach program assessment and reporting.
- Coordinate K-12 engagement programs with College and departmental student recruiting efforts. Assist with College student recruiting efforts as needed.
- Support development and operations of academic year programming aimed at engaging pre-college students in topical areas of interest including, but not limited to, strategic focus areas for IIDAI. This includes some work outside of the standard office hours, including weekends.
- In collaboration with topical experts from IIDAI and other emergent research areas, develop Grainger Engineering Worldwide Youth in Science & Engineering (WYSE) academic year programming. This includes K-12 programming for family STEM nights, out-of-school, and in-school programming, as well as professional development for educators.
- Coordinate the logistical planning and implementation of WYSE programming relevant to the IIDAI and other prioritized efforts. This includes working closely with faculty and staff to identify temporary staffing needs, recruiting and selecting staff, assigning and coordinating their work, and managing their performance.
- Recruit, train, and coordinate the WYSE LEADer volunteer pool, including course offerings, workshops, and Registered Student Organization (RSO) partnerships.
- Coordinate the recruitment of students, parents, and educators to participate in these programs.
- Maintain a working knowledge of outreach efforts in departments throughout the College and identify opportunities to share resources and best practices across programs.
- Support Regional, State, and National Competitions such as FIRST Lego Robotics, Science Olympiad, etc. to ensure a quality visit for the organization and families in attendance. This includes some work outside of the standard office hours, including weekends.
- Liase with State and National organization event planning to identify needs and connect planning team members with relevant campus resources and support such as Conferences & Events and Facilities & Services.
- Assist in identifying appropriate campus facilities for events.
- Ensure appropriate waivers and Protection of Minors processes are completed.
- Assist with volunteer recruitment using established campus networks and bulletins.
- Identify subject-matter experts or suggest keynote speakers.
- Monitor inventories, track, and reconcile expenditures and program assessments.
- Travel out of town to schools and other locations within the state of Illinois may occur.
- Other relevant duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in STEM, education, student services, or related field.
- A total of two (2) years (24 months) in education, training, and/or work experience in coordinating outreach and/or educational programs in a collegiate setting.
- Demonstrated experience advising college students.
- Demonstrated experience supervising students or volunteers (e.g., selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating staff).
- Master's Degree in STEM, education, student services, or related field.
- Experience creating educational programs.
- Experience managing budgets.
- Experience in grant, proposal and report writing.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with others, including the ability to make effective public presentations.
- Knowledge of program assessment and experience in its use.
- Knowledge of traditional and modern methods, tools, and techniques for increasing representation in STEM.
- Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to interact with a broad array of internal and external constituents.
- Ability to work flexible and extended hours, including some weekends.
- Ability to remain in a stationary place for periods of time.
- Ability to move boxes of program supplies weighing up to 10 lbs.
- Travel out of town to schools and other locations within the state of Illinois may occur. (A university of Illinois vehicle will be provided and operation of the vehicle requires a current driver's license.)
