Job Overview

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Bureau of Air (BOA), Air Pollution Control, Field Operations Section, Northern Region Des Plaines Unit A is seeking to hire an Environmental Protection Engineer 1. This position performs beginning level professional duties related to the observation of, participation in, or conduction of, field inspections and investigations with other professional staff of pollution sources and environmental control systems in the Central Region Unit. The ideal candidate will assist a higher-level engineer in the investigation of the design, location, construction, maintenance, or inspection of public and private facilities relating to Air Pollution Control.

Essential Functions

  • Assists higher level engineers to gain knowledge and training in conducting routine plant site
    inspections/investigations and performing engineering analysis of industrial facilities for the
    Bureau of Air, Field Operations Section, Northern Region, Unit A;
  • Assists higher level engineers with performing investigations of emergency situations and routine
    citizen complaints of air pollution;
  • Assists in investigating/evaluating/supporting routine enforcement situations;
  • Participates and observes higher level staff in meetings such as with elected officials, plant site
    representatives or any concerned citizens;
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties
    enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college with
    a bachelor's degree in an engineering science. Typically, the subject matter would involve the type of
    coursework associated with environmental (sanitary, hydraulic, hydrology, and air pollution specialties),
    civil (sanitary, hydraulic, and hydrology specialties), general, industrial, mechanical, chemical, public
    health, electronic, acoustical or aeronautical engineering or engineering mechanics or a closely related
    engineering specialty.
  • Requires no previous experience.
  • This class is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title

Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance)

  • Prefers the ability to utilize a personal computer with knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook, Access and
    Excel software.
  • Prefers proficiency in engineering calculations and judgment.
  • Prefers the ability to understand oral and written instructions.
  • Prefers the ability to understand rules and regulations.
  • Prefers the ability to prepare clear and concise written reports and correspondence.
  • Prefers good organizational skills and decision-making abilities.
  • Prefers good verbal communication skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to travel.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license.
  • Requires ability to pass physical exam intended to determine if medically fit to wear respiratory
    protection and function in high heat stress situations while wearing chemical protective clothing per 29
    CFR 1910.12.
  • Requires ability to lift heavy sampling equipment (e.g. 50 pounds).
  • Requires the ability to pass a name-based background check.
