Department Overview:
The Calumet City Fire Department consists of 56 career personnel, including a Fire Chief, Deputy Fire Chief, six Captains, three Lieutenants, nine Engineers, and 36 Firefighters. All members are paramedics operating under the South Cook County EMS System. Many also serve on specialty rescue teams such as Hazardous Materials, Technical Rescue, and Dive Teams.

The department is part of MABAS Division 24 and the Third Fire District, collaborating with 20 municipalities for mutual aid in major incidents. Automatic aid on structure fires is provided by neighboring departments. The department operates from two stations and handles approximately 9,000 calls annually.

Hiring Process:

Complete mandatory orientation.

Pass the NTN examination with a score of 70 or higher.

Participate in an oral interview with the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners.

Successfully pass:

Medical screening
Drug screening
Complete the Illinois Firefighter Basic Operations Course.

Failing to meet minimum requirements
Felony convictions or crimes involving moral turpitude
Certain misdemeanor convictions as outlined by Illinois Criminal Code Section 5/10-2.1-6
Classification as a conscientious objector
Failure to attend the oral interview
Failing any stage of the screening process, including psychological evaluation, polygraph, drug screening, medical exam, or eye exam
