Safety & Community Service Officer
Under general supervision, the Safety & Community Service Officer protects institutional property against fire, theft, vandalism, and unauthorized entry, performing the following listed principal responsibilities to provide service to the college students, staff, faculty, and visitors in accordance with the most recent established procedures and directives. Aid, as instructed or in the absence of orders, in disaster control, i.e., bomb threats, fire, explosions, and tornados. Assist the Emergency & Safety Coordinator by completing inspections of first aid kits, fire extinguishers, Automated External Defibrillators and cabinets, other safety related equipment and other tasks as given by the Emergency and Safety Coordinator or the Chief of Police.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
1. Patrol buildings and grounds of the college by motorized or foot patrol to deter and report crime, enforce non-criminal violations and provide service to students, visitors, staff, and faculty.
2. Examine doors, windows, and gates to determine if they are secure and properly working.
3. Watch for and report irregularities such as fire, hazards, leaking water pipes, and security doors left unlocked.
4. Sounds alarm or calls police and/or fire department in case of a fire, presence of an unauthorized person, or other emergencies. Assist with emergency communications and evacuations.
5. Permits authorized persons to enter property.
6. Lock or unlock college buildings as assigned.
7. Provide basic first aid to ill and injured persons.
8. Regularly inspect and refill first aid kits.
9. Regularly inspect and test Automated External Defibrillators and cabinets.
10. Regularly inspect fire extinguishers and check the certification tag.
11. Make frequent checks of the library and address college and library code violations.
12. Assist with matron duties.
13. Accountable for department policies, procedures, applicable rules, and work requirements.
14. Related duties as assigned.
Education/Experience
A minimum five (5) years of related experience with demonstratable knowledge of emergency equipment and first aid supplies. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Must be CPR certified or achieve certification within 90 days.
Qualifications
- Ability to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence and department reports.
- Ability to work independently and exercise good judgement.
- Contacts require persuasiveness and diplomacy to obtain action, consent, agreement, or approval.
- Possesses a positive and service-oriented nature.
- Possesses a desire to protect the property and image of the college.
- Should be familiar with security and first aid basics.
- This position may require working varied shifts, weekends, and holidays.
