Can Press Operator
Job Description:
I. POSITION SUMMARY
Setup, operate, adjust and maintain a variety of automatic mechanical or hydraulic presses, utilizing single or double-end can formers and/or sequence of multiple station dies for production of metal shells/circular blanks of various dimensions to produce steel parts used in the manufacture of filter products. May perform other duties as assigned.

Champion Laboratories, Inc. is a full-line filter manufacturer with facilities located in Southern Illinois, South Carolina, Michigan, California, Europe and China. The sales and marketing operations of Champion Laboratories are headquartered in Albion, IL. Through the use of a direct sales force, independent manufacturer’s agents, and in some cases direct account responsibility, automotive, light truck, and heavy duty filters and related products are sold and distributed worldwide.
IV. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Interprets/completes various forms of paperwork including shop packets, scan tickets, inspection sheets, PPR’s, TPM’s, etc.
Sets up and changes over equipment. Locates proper dies and transports and places die in press. Secures die in press by pushing/pulling heavy-weight die into position, aligns with tape measure, and bolts/clamps into place using hand tools.
Starts and observes press operation and makes any necessary adjustments to ensure conformance to order specifications. Turns equipment on, manually feeds blanks/rolls into feeding mechanism, manually controls press to observe each operation, and makes necessary adjustments before engaging automatic operation.
Determines product dimensions and compares to specifications; performs regular quality checks during operation using calipers, micrometers, fixed gauges, etc.
Supplies/prepares materials for storing products and removes finished product or returnable materials from press area.
Initiates die maintenance sheet and works with Tool Room and/or maintenance personnel when required to adjust malfunctions and maintain dies/press in proper operating condition.
Polices work area picking up and disposing of scrap, trash, etc., and performs general housekeeping tasks.
V. MINIMUM SELECTION CRITERIA
Communication:
Communicate with appropriate personnel about problems encountered while performing job responsibilities; in-person interaction with co-workers and supervisors.
Learning/Reading/Mathematical Comprehension:
Interpret/complete various forms of paperwork.
Comprehend prints showing part specifications.
Develop working knowledge of press to perform required setups and adjustments to equipment.
Use calipers and micrometer to ensure part quality.
Perform basic math functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Visual Requirements:
Visually locate proper die.
Set-up and monitor operation of press to ensure equipment is running properly and parts conform to specifications.
Read various measuring devices.
Motor Skills:
Hand-eye coordination to setup/adjust equipment using various hand tools, operate control/switches, use measuring devices, to feed steel through straightener, align/secure die in press, and operate motorized equipment etc.
Lift average weight materials occasionally; handles/pushes/pulls up to 50 lbs. frequently.
Stand/walk continually.
Frequently bend, push/pull and reach with hands and arms.
Special Skills:
Mechanical ability to safely and efficiently set-up, trouble-shoot, adjust and operate press.
Environment:
Work in an industrial environment with exposure to noise, possible temperature extremes, dirt, solvents, paper dust, etc.
Dependa bility:
Able to maintain satisfactory record of attendance and conduct. Able to work any shift and overtime as required.
