Head of People (Remote from Illinois)

In this role, you will design, build, and lead the People function for a fast-growing, high-velocity startup environment. You will partner closely with the executive team to translate business strategy into a scalable people roadmap, professionalizing hiring, compensation, performance, and career frameworks. This is a hands-on, 0→1 leadership role where you will establish the systems, processes, and culture that will define the company’s growth for years to come. You will lead recruiting, people operations, manager enablement, and employee experience initiatives while ensuring fairness, consistency, and compliance across the organization. The ideal candidate thrives in ambiguity, acts with high judgment, and enjoys both strategic planning and operational execution. Success will be measured by the quality of hires, retention, manager effectiveness, and the overall strength of the people function as a driver of business growth.
Accountabilities:
- Serve as the senior People leader and trusted advisor to the executive team
- Translate company strategy and growth targets into a clear People roadmap
- Build a scalable People organization, including recruiting, people operations, total rewards, and learning & development
- Own end-to-end recruiting strategy across engineering, product, GTM, and operations
- Establish compensation philosophy, pay bands, performance management processes, and career frameworks
- Enable managers to scale effectively, providing guidance on hiring, feedback, performance, and development
- Implement People operations systems, policies, compliance, and HR infrastructure for global teams
- Foster a high-performance culture grounded in accountability, ownership, and trust
- 10+ years of People leadership experience, preferably in high-growth startups
- Prior experience as an early Head of People or senior leader building People functions from scratch
- Deep expertise across recruiting, compensation, performance management, and People operations
- Proven ability to partner with executives and influence decisions without relying on bureaucracy
- Strong experience scaling teams rapidly at Series A–C stage
- Comfort operating in ambiguity with high judgment and bias toward action
- Exceptional communication skills, credible and pragmatic with senior leaders
- Bonus: experience supporting global or mixed FTE/contractor teams, familiarity with modern People tools, and prior collaboration with Finance on headcount and compensation modeling
