Job Title: Welder / Fabricator – 2nd Shift
Job Description

This role focuses on performing MIG, TIG, and related welding and fabrication tasks on steel, stainless steel, zinc, and other metals in a job shop environment. You will read and interpret blueprints and work orders, set up and operate welding equipment, and assemble and fit parts to meet production and quality standards with some supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and production drawings to understand job requirements and specifications.
  • Lay out, position, and secure parts and assemblies according to blueprints with some assistance as needed.
  • Turn on welding machines, connect cables properly, and adjust machine settings to achieve proper weld penetration and appearance.
  • Set up and operate gas regulators and torches by turning regulator valves, activating gas flow, and adjusting gas mixtures and pressure to obtain the desired flame for cutting.
  • Manually guide the electrode or welding gun along the weld line, maintaining proper arc length, travel speed, and bead appearance under supervision.
  • Weld flat, cylindrical, and irregular parts by positioning components with bolts, clamps, or tack welds to hold them securely in place prior to final welding.
  • Perform MIG welding on steel, stainless steel, zinc-coated materials, and other metals as required by the job.
  • Assist with TIG, flux core, stick, and aluminum welding tasks as needed to support production.
  • Fit, assemble, and fabricate structures, sheet metal components, and other assemblies according to specifications.
  • Use a tape measure accurately to verify dimensions, layouts, and finished part sizes.
  • Grind and finish welds and surfaces to meet quality and appearance standards.
  • Follow production schedules and work efficiently to meet deadlines and output targets.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area and handle tools and equipment safely.
  • Comply with all safety procedures while working around galvanized steel and other industrial materials.
Essential Skills
  • Experience with MIG welding in a production or job shop environment.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and work orders with some assistance.
  • Ability to use a tape measure accurately for layout and inspection.
  • Basic skill in setting up welding machines, including connecting cables and adjusting machine settings.
  • Ability to adjust gas regulators, mixtures, and pressures for cutting and welding operations.
  • Capability to weld on steel, stainless steel, and zinc-coated materials.
  • Experience with fitting and assembly of structures, sheet metal, and fabricated components.
  • Proficiency in grinding and basic finishing of welds and metal surfaces.
  • Comfort working in an industrial job shop environment around galvanized steel.
  • Ability to obtain a welding certification or at least 6 months of welding experience (if not already held).
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with TIG welding and TIG equipment setup.
  • Experience with flux core welding processes.
  • Experience with stick welding.
  • Familiarity with aluminum welding.
  • Prior exposure to production welding environments.
  • Blueprint reading skills beyond basic levels, including complex structures and assemblies.
  • Experience working with mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, and sheet metal.
  • Interest in growing into advanced welding or machine operator roles over time.

Work Environment

This is a 2nd shift position, working Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The role is based in a typical industrial job shop that can be hot, dirty, and not optimally lit at times. You will work around galvanized steel and other industrial materials, using welding machines, cutting torches, grinders, and standard fabrication tools. Appropriate industrial work attire and personal protective equipment are expected to ensure safety and comfort in this environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Addison, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.75 - $20.00/hr.
