Supplemental Information
Why you should consider teaching for SIU's School of Aviation: SIU’s School of Aviation is part of a vibrant Aviation community in Southern Illinois. Located on a separate airport campus, we offer undergraduate degrees in Aircraft Maintenance (our Aviation Technologies program), Aviation Flight, and Aviation Management.
We also offer graduate degrees in Aviation Management. SIU considers a Masters Degree to be the terminal degree in Aviation, so this position offers the expectation of tenure without the requirement for a Ph.D. Our typical tenure track academic load is nine credit hour equivalents per semester – significantly less than many of our sister institutions. Our Assistant Professors are expected to pursue a research agenda, but don’t let this scare you. We offer ample resources to help new faculty with this process, including mentoring, course releases, and startup packages. With these course releases, you can expect academic loads as low as six credit hour equivalents as you are learning the ropes.
For the aviation enthusiast - and we hope you are - our Airport Campus is located at Southern Illinois Airport (KMDH). Between our SIU programs and local aircraft businesses, our airport is a "happening" place. It is not unusual to see five or six small aircraft in the pattern at any given time.
Many of our Aviation Technologies students find part time employment with Crucial Aviation, Enhanced Aero, Code One Aviation, or SIU’s own busy maintenance shop. For those interested in owning or operating their own aircraft, T-hangars are commonly available for individual rental for under $200 a month. Aircraft can also be rented from our local FBO. Our competitive NIFA flying team, the Flying Salukis, recently won their 15th consecutive regional championship.
Our main campus is less than 15 minutes by car from our airport campus and offers many undergraduate and graduate programs. There are opportunities for collaborative research with Engineering, Psychology, Agriculture, and many other programs. The larger University often refers to our Aviation School as “the jewel of SIU” and is proud of our accomplishments. Of course, SIU also offers generous free tuition benefits to employees wishing to diversify their studies. New faculty in the College of Health and Human Sciences are offered competitive startup packages, including research assistant support, course releases, and summer salary designed to jumpstart research scholarship. Our research programs encompass departmental, campus, community, and national/international collaborations.
Southern Illinois University Carbondale is an R1 Opportunity University with a statewide economic impact of $2.7 billion dollars. We offer 200+ undergraduate degrees, minors and specializations, 79 master’s degrees, and 40 doctoral degrees. Our main campus is 1,136 acres, with additional acreage in University Farms, Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center, and other facilities. The university is an essential part of the city of Carbondale and an important contributor to the culture of the entire region. While Carbondale includes many of the amenities of urban life, it retains its small-town flavor. Cost of living is considerably lower in the region than similar areas elsewhere, and many employees commute from nearby counties.
The Southern Illinois region is distinct from the rest of the state, boasting considerable natural beauty including the Shawnee National Forest, many state parks, national wildlife areas, and several lakes beloved for recreation. Local foods are readily available in the area, with a variety of eateries and a growing specialized food truck presence. The area is home to the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, an official wine appellation designation. The wineries extend the cultural reach of the community, hosting live music and continual art exhibits. The campus itself is a microcosm of the area, with a lake and forest on campus, as well as traditional collegiate architecture, quad, and residential halls. Students enjoy outdoor study areas as well as specialized computer labs scattered across campus, including in the three million volume Morris Library.
