Job Summary

Installs insulating materials around steam, water, and air pipes. Repairs insulation on steam and cold water pipes, hot water tanks, sterilizers, boilers, and air conditioning ducts. Works in cooperation with Steamfitters and Plumbers, following up on their duties by installing insulating materials. Installs fire protection systems by filling openings with fire-resistant materials. Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate is required .
  • Licensed Journeyman level Pipe Coverer status is required .
  • Currently licensed as an initial asbestos worker or supervisor by the Illinois Department of Public Health or any authority having jurisdiction to issue asbestos workers' licenses is required .

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. Candidates who are selected to fill safety-sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process .

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS

  • Skills and experience equivalent to a Journeyman level Pipe Coverer.
  • Ability to provide for the maintenance and repair of all pipe covering in County institutions.
  • Ability to work with Steamfitters and Plumbers by installing insulating materials.
  • Ability to remove asbestos and other hazardous waste material.
  • Thorough knowledge of insulating methods and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of tools, materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge of blueprints and safety procedures.
  • Skilled at fabricating and installing commercial and industrial insulation on heating, ventilation, steam generation, process piping, plumbing systems and soundproofing systems.

Physical Requirements

Very Heavy Work

Very Heavy work involves exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
