Clinical Mental Health Counselor

Governors State University is seeking to hire a Clinical Mental Health Counselor to provide comprehensive clinical services and outreach/educational programming to support the mental health and well-being of Governors State University's diverse student population. Using a brief/time-limited therapy model, the Counselor conducts diagnostic assessments; develops and implements treatment plans; and provides individual, couples, and group therapy for students presenting with a range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, academic and interpersonal difficulties, and other mental health needs. The Counselor also provides crisis counseling and intervention for students experiencing acute mental health or substance-related emergencies and facilitates referrals to campus and community resources when appropriate. As a member of the Counseling and Wellness Center, the Counselor collaborates with campus partners to promote student wellness, offers clinical consultation to faculty and staff, and provides training to graduate students in psychology, counseling, or related fields.
Essential Responsibilities
65% Counseling and Clinical Responsibilities:
- Provide direct clinical services to students using a brief/time-limited therapy model, including diagnostic assessment, intake, development and implementation of treatment plans, individual therapy, couples therapy, group therapy, termination, and appropriate follow-up.
- Deliver crisis counseling and intervention services for students experiencing acute mental health and/or substance-related emergencies, including conducting risk assessments, implementing appropriate interventions, and facilitating referrals to campus and community resources.
- Collaborate with campus departments and partners to support coordinated crisis stabilization efforts and ensure continuity of care.
- Serve as a resource and consultant to the campus community, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders on issues related to student mental health and well-being.
- Develop, coordinate, and implement innovative outreach and educational programs designed to enhance students' academic success, social functioning, and mental health. Provide training and guidance to master's and doctoral-level counseling interns and practicum students, including campus outreach strategies.
- Deliver ongoing in-service training and mental health educational programs to the university community, addressing both general student needs and issues relevant to specific student subpopulations.
- Maintain active and professional relationships with community mental health providers and referral sources to support continuity of care for students.
- Provide supervision and training for peer mentors and coordinate outreach initiatives throughout the academic year.
- Engage in professional development and remain active in relevant state and national organizations, such as the Illinois Counseling Association (ICA) and the American College Counseling Association (ACCA).
- Participate on university committees and complete other job-related duties or projects as assigned by the Director of Counseling and Wellness.
- Complete and maintain all clinical documentation, including intake forms, informed consent, client rights, releases of information, case notes, and clinical notes, in compliance with State of Illinois regulations, FERPA guidelines, and ethical standards of practice, including those outlined by the American Psychological
- Association (APA) and other relevant professional bodies.
- This is a full-time on-campus position.
- Days and hours: Monday through Friday, 7.5-hour workday with an unpaid lunch.
- This position may occasionally be required to attend outreach events held outside of regular business hours, including weekends.
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Requirement:
1. Master's degree from an accredited school or university in social or behavioral science or a related health specialty area.

A. Current State of IL Licensure as a Licensed Social Worker or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
OR
B. Three (3) years of progressively more responsible full-time experience in social work in a medical/clinical or social service agency setting.
Desire Education and Experience:
- Master's degree from an accredited institution in clinical or counseling psychology, clinical mental health counseling, social work, or a related behavioral health field OR Licensed Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.).
- Current State of Illinois licensure as an LCPC or LCSW.
- Two (2) or more years of progressively responsible clinical and administrative experience in a mental health setting.
- Two (2) or more years of clinical and administrative experience in a university and/or college counseling center.
- Experience working in a college or university counseling center with both residential and commuter student populations.
- Strong clinical psychotherapeutic skills, including competency in diagnostic assessment, brief therapy, treatment planning, group therapy, and crisis intervention.
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with individuals from diverse cultural, racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Demonstrated generalist clinical skills, including the delivery of short-term/brief, evidence-based individual and group interventions.
- Ability to independently organize, manage, and prioritize tasks, including maintaining a clinical caseload.
