Door Person

Queen Mary Tavern, a small neighborhood cocktail tavern at Division & Hoyne, is looking for a door person to work on Friday and Saturday evenings. Hours are every Friday and Saturday, 6pm-1am.

Working the door at Queen Mary has traditionally been easygoing compared to many other bar door jobs: this is not really a "bouncer" or "security" job, but more like a host. We are looking for someone who is personable and friendly, to warmly greet guests and thank them as they leave; check IDs; know and uphold our door policies regarding age, pets, intoxication and so forth; manage capacity and flow in the bar during peak hours; and help bus tables or wash glassware when you have down time. Other duties include informing guests when the patio will be closing, asking them to move indoors when it does close, stacking the patio furniture, and informing guests that the bar is closing and it is time for them to leave at the appropriate time. Outstanding reliability and punctuality is a must.

Candidates should be comfortable with occasionally asking guests to leave, due to bad behavior and so forth, and especially with politely turning away those who have already had too much to drink before they enter. But if past experience holds, those situations should be the exception rather than the rule.

The schedule is fixed and reliable, and does not vary week to week or seasonally. Time off is available when needed, as we have a roster of other door staff willing to fill in from time to time. Additional hours may occasionally be available due to holidays or festivals, if interested.

The ideal candidate will either have experience as a barback, or be interested in learning to barback, so that they can substitute as barback from time to time.

Additional hours are available with our prep team; duties would include assorted restocking, maintenance and cleaning tasks outside of service hours.

Candidates must be 21 or over, must hold a valid State of Illinois BASSET seller-server certification, and must be able to lift and carry up to 40 lbs.
