Job Title: Phlebotomist

Duration: 3-Month Contract (Potential to Hire )
Work Setting: Algonquin, IL 60102

Independent Outpatient Facility (IOP) – Medium-Sized Location

Shift: 8am-6pm M-F, rotating Saturday's 9-1

Job Summary

The Phlebotomist is responsible for performing blood collection and specimen handling while ensuring accuracy, patient comfort, and compliance with established protocols. This role includes assisting with daily workflow, troubleshooting, and maintaining high standards of quality and safety in a fast-paced clinical environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles on adult and geriatric patients
• Collect, label, centrifuge, process, and store specimens according to established procedures
• Accurately match laboratory requisitions with specimen samples
• Prepare specimens for transport while maintaining integrity and proper storage conditions
• Explain procedures clearly and professionally to patients to ensure comfort and cooperation
• Update patient information and maintain accurate records in system
• Perform data entry and documentation with high attention to detail
• Conduct routine equipment maintenance and decontamination
• Follow OSHA and DEP safety regulations and infection control protocols
• Assist in workflow improvement and troubleshooting issues
• Answer calls and provide lab-related information as needed

Work Environment & Expectations

• Medium-sized outpatient setting
• Expected to perform 25–30 blood draws per day (estimated)
• Standing for most of the shift
• Work independently and alongside one team member
• Two weeks of initial training and orientation

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 1+ year of phlebotomy experience (2–4 years preferred)
• Experience in a fast-paced lab, hospital, or outpatient setting
• High School Diploma or GED
• Strong knowledge of venipuncture techniques and specimen handling
• Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office
• Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
