Description:

The Day Camp Counselor helps create a fun, engaging, and safe camp experience for children throughout the summer season. Under the supervision of the Day Camp Coordinator and Lead Counselor, this position assists in delivering daily activities, fostering positive camper interactions, and maintaining an encouraging environment for all participants. The program meets at the Villa Park Recreation Center.

Working Hours:

  • 20-35 hours a week during the summer.
  • Monday-Friday, June 1-August 7. (10 weeks). Hours vary weekly from 7:30 am-6:00 pm.
  • Additionally, be available for all trainings the week of May 27.

Examples of Duties:

  • Collaborate with the Lead Counselor in planning, preparing, and delivering camp activities including but not limited to games, arts and crafts, sports, and themed programs appropriate to the campers’ age group.
  • Support the Lead Counselor in preparing program materials, supervising group activities, and ensuring smooth transitions throughout the day.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive atmosphere that encourages camper participation and teamwork.
  • Able to be organized, yet flexible enough to meet the needs of the children, both mentally and physically.
  • Demonstrate a mature and professional attitude through dependability, punctuality, and genuine awareness.
  • Communicate observations or concerns to the Lead Counselor or Camp Coordinator.
  • Report and correct unsafe program conditions.
  • Stay aware of campers with allergies and/or medication requirements (does not administer medication).
  • Assist with daily setup and cleanup of camp areas and materials.
  • Participate actively in staff training, planning meetings, and all required certification sessions.
  • Assist Lead Counselor as directed.
  • Perform additional duties as needed to support camp operations.

Qualifications:

  • Must be 16 years of age.
  • Camp Counselors should be outgoing, energetic, creative, organized and have some experience working with children.
  • Counselors must become certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively and support other members of the team.
  • Ability to maintain strong working relationships with children, parents, employees, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to effectively apply written and oral English language skills, additional Spanish language skills is advantageous but not required.
  • Advanced organization skills, maintaining multiple projects and schedules.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing individually or in a group setting.
  • Ability to work under stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of various behavior patterns of children as well as basic concepts of development in children.

Salary:

  • $15.50/per hour

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:

Must possess:

  • Mobility to conduct activities that involve substantial walking, standing, and moderate sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, crawling, twisting, and reaching on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to work with and above shoulder height with a weight up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to work with arms extended shoulder height with a weight of up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, and kneel on the floor without assistance.
  • Ability to push and pull items such as playground and outdoor equipment.

Work is primarily performed in an outdoor setting with constant interruptions. Exposure to outdoor elements and inclement weather such as rain, sleet, excessive heat, and cold are expected. Moderate to high levels of noise consistent with an outdoor camp environment are expected.
