Job Summary
The Tape Librarian is responsible for maintaining, organizing, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of magnetic computer tapes, NAS drives, and USB disks within the Houston Tape Library. This position supports data management and IT operations by overseeing media storage, retrieval, labeling, verification, and shipment processes. The Tape Librarian also ensures compliance with company quality, safety, and data-handling standards.
Job Description
- Serve as the primary point of contact for all tape library projects and the transmittal program.
- Manage and coordinate all tape pools, including creating, expanding, reducing, and labeling.
- Verify all outgoing client deliverables (disks and tapes) for accuracy and quality.
- Register and document all incoming media.
- Address cataloging issues related to media used by internal users or archive personnel.
- Track and report media errors; flag and record soft and hard errors in the appropriate database.
- Generate media inventory and status reports as required.
- Locate and track media through database searches and inventory management tools.
- Ensure proper care, labeling, and handling of all computer media.
- Retrieve, file, and sort media for internal users, archives, and warehouses.
- Prepare and package media for outgoing shipments and verify shipment documentation.
- Load and eject media in automated silos using generated task lists.
- Perform regular maintenance and housekeeping of the tape library area.
- Assist in locating misplaced (“not in rack”) media and report findings to the Supervisor.
- Maintain adherence to all work procedures, Quality Assurance, and QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, and Environmental) requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor or Group Leader.
- Shift: 1st Sh ift (8am - 5pm)
Skills Required
- 3–5 years of experience in a tape library, computer operations, or related technical environment.
- Strong understanding of tape library operations and data management processes.
- Experience with MMS tape management systems or similar tools.
- Proficient in database usage and reporting.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
- Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy.
- Effective communication and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and train back-up personnel when required.
- Ability to lift and handle materials weighing up to 25 lbs.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED
Pay Rate
- $25 per hour
