Painter Sub-Foreperson - University Housing
Housing Facilities Maintenance University Housing provides an essential element of the Illinois experience, with hundreds of employees across seven units working together to build and maintain safe, healthy and welcoming homes for our residents. University Housing Facilities include maintenance, facility planning, engineering, interior design and building service.
Job Summary Assists with coordinating and supervising painting, remodeling, and maintenance work performed by painters and apprentices. Supervisors will engage in and implement University Housing's inclusion, culture, and climate initiatives.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Coordinates and supervises remodeling and maintenance work performed by painters.
- Verifies and approves material requisitioned by employees to ensure adherence to painting budget.
- Mixes paint and delivers paint to the job site.
- Prepares painting job estimates as requested by the Painter Foreperson.
- Enforces safety procedures.
- Participates in the handling of personnel issues such as approving time sheets.
- Performs light housekeeping duties and fire protection maintenance.
- Closely supervises and evaluates new employees and apprentices.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

- Position involves performing physical activities that require considerable use of one's arms and legs and moving one's whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, squatting, grabbing, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, stretching, twisting, reaching and handling of materials in the course of completing work assignments.
- Position involves standing and performing work duties for an extended period of time in the process of completing projects and/or assignments.
- Position involves seeing objects at close range or at a distance and adjusting focus.
- Position involves matching or detecting differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a recognized painter apprenticeship program or four (4) years (48 months) of full-time journey-level painter experience.
- Three (3) additional years (36 months) of full-time journey-level painter experience.
- Possession of a valid State of Illinois Class "D" Driver's License.
- Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures such as highways and roads.
- Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, regulations and strategies to promote health and safety practices for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
- Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
- Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, and other office procedures and terminology.
- Skill in time and resource management.
- Skill in personnel resources management through motivating, developing, and directing subordinates as they work, identifying the best skill sets for completion of the job.
- Skill in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
- Skill in determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly.
- Ability to operate a personal computer with a general understanding of application software, and an understanding of the Internet.
