Position Overview:

This position is accountable for the analysis and interpretation of crash data through the application of scientific research, techniques, methods and the preparation of evaluation studies and reports based on those analyses. This position identifies crash causal factors through the conduct of in-depth crash investigations and analyses. This position reviews crash-related reports to determine findings and makes recommendations relative to the scope of future investigative efforts.

Essential Functions

  • Analyzes crash data to determine causative and contributing factors associated with motor vehicle crashes and recommends various changes to address the primary causal factors to ultimately reduce crash occurrence and severity.
  • Develops innovative methods for the collections, analysis, and reporting of crash and crash site data to enhance the continual monitoring of the crash profile in Illinois.
  • Compiles, analyzes, and reports crash data for assigned investigations and studies to ensure data needs are met.
  • Structures the crash investigation activities in conformance with generally accepted crash investigation and reconstruction standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Recommends studies based on investigative findings.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completion of a bachelor's degree majoring in public administration or criminal justice, OR Completion of two years of college PLUS two years of law enforcement related experience working with polic crash report forms and crash data, motor vehicle crash related data, and the Illinois crash form, or a combination thereof, OR six years of law enforcement related experience working with police crash report forms and crash data, motor vehicle crash related data, and the Illinois crash form, or a combination thereof.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience with crash investigation principles and techniques.
  • Proficient in the use of digital cameras.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong writing and oral communication skills.

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.
  • Frequent statewide travel with overnight stays.
