Order Picker

Elgin, IL

Job Title: Order Picker

Job Description

This role focuses on accurately picking and preparing glass hardware orders for shipment within a high-volume distribution warehouse. You will handle physical order sheets, move inventory, and support shipping and receiving activities while following strict safety procedures. Over time, you will receive training on material handling equipment to support broader warehouse operations.

Responsibilities

  • Pick and pull glass hardware orders throughout the day using physical order sheets, ensuring accuracy and completeness for each shipment.
  • Package glass hardware securely to prevent damage during transit, using appropriate packing materials and tools such as box cutters.
  • Move products and materials throughout the warehouse using manual pallet jacks and, once trained, powered equipment such as sit-down forklifts.
  • Receive incoming shipments by unloading trucks, breaking down pallets, sorting items, and organizing materials in designated areas.
  • Label, package, and stage products for shipping, ensuring all items are properly quantified, tagged, and ready for outbound transport.
  • Perform cycle counts and assist with inventory control by tracking, recording, and reconciling stock levels as needed.
  • Handle general labor tasks in the warehouse, including organizing aisles, maintaining clean work areas, and supporting overall warehouse operations.
  • Lift and move products weighing up to 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally, using safe lifting techniques.
  • Follow all safety guidelines and warehouse procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to equipment training requirements.
  • Collaborate with warehouse team members and leadership to meet daily productivity goals and maintain efficient workflow.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 months of experience with order picking in a warehouse or similar environment.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English to interpret order sheets, labels, and basic documentation.
  • Ability to read and follow physical order sheets with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds throughout the day and occasionally up to 75 pounds, using safe lifting practices.
  • Experience with order pulling and packing in a warehouse setting.
  • Basic experience with manual pallet jacks for moving pallets and materials.
  • Familiarity with shipping and receiving processes, including unloading, sorting, packaging, labeling, and staging materials.
  • Comfort working in a physically demanding role that involves standing, walking, lifting, and handling materials for most of the shift.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Any prior experience operating a sit-down forklift is a plus.
  • Previous warehouse experience in picking, shipping, and receiving is highly desirable.
  • Basic computer skills to support inventory and shipping tasks are beneficial.
  • Experience with inventory control, including cycle counting and warehouse inventory tracking, is an advantage.
  • Experience in general labor, material handling, or similar roles in a warehouse environment is helpful.
  • Willingness to be trained on forklifts and other warehouse equipment once in a permanent role.

Why Work Here?

You will join a large, established distribution operation that specializes in delivering glass products and related hardware, providing exposure to a broad range of warehouse and logistics activities. Safety is a top priority, with clear procedures and training designed to protect everyone on site. As you transition into a permanent role, you gain access to comprehensive benefits, including health, vision, dental, and 401(k), supporting both your well-being and long-term financial security. The company invests in your development by offering training on forklifts and other equipment, creating opportunities to expand your skills and grow your career in distribution and warehousing.

Work Environment

The role is based in a very large, clean warehouse with long aisles of inventory and an active distribution floor. The facility is not temperature controlled, so working conditions will reflect the outside weather, ranging from warmer in summer to cooler in winter. Noise levels can be moderate to high due to material handling equipment and ongoing warehouse operations. The standard schedule is a first-shift assignment from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will initially use basic tools such as box cutters and manual pallet jacks, and over time you will receive training on pallet jacks and sit-down forklifts. The dress code requires long pants, work-appropriate clothing without tank tops or baggy garments, and steel-toe shoes; all other required personal protective equipment is provided. You will work closely with warehouse leadership and team members in a structured, safety-focused environment that emphasizes teamwork and efficiency.
