Sustainability Coordinator

Under the direction of the Vice President of Administrative Services the Sustainability Coordinator will coordinate and grow the Center for Sustainability at the college, whereas the Center serves as a campus- and community-wide resource for sustainability literacy, environmental stewardship, and community outreach. The Coordinator also provides educational materials and support for college faculty and staff at all levels of the organization through supporting pilot projects, presenting sustainability information and programs, and supporting and promoting sustainability objectives.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Assist the Vice President of Administrative Services in the development and operations the campus-wide sustainability initiative:

2. Oversee the operations for The Center for Sustainability, a resource to the entire college community offering supplies and education programs to broaden sustainability literacy and behavior.

3. Assist in developing and implementing long- and short-term public outreach, co-curricular, and/or extra-curricular programs to strengthen sustainability.

4. Work with faculty to develop unique classroom presentations specific to the curriculum and faculty needs as it relates to sustainability.

5. Develop and deliver professional development workshops to staff and faculty related to current sustainability topics through the Center for Teaching and Learning.

6. Complete reports pertaining to recycling and sustainability for submission as required by the State of Illinois and the Illinois Community College Board.

7. Lead a multi-level stakeholder group to implement, improve and monitor recycling efforts on campus.

8. Prepare reports related to sustainability performance tracking including reports to the Vice President of Administration.

9. Assist in obtaining grant funding, corporate partnerships, and programs that promote campus sustainability efforts as appropriate.

10. Collaborate with other campus divisions to identify and implement environmental impact mitigation strategies, ex., improved recycling awareness and related equipment; increased automated energy savings in buildings and IT; or reducing other resources to save money and minimize impact.

11. Assist in maintaining the campus community garden and Shakespeare Garden, including: recruiting and managing garden volunteers; purchasing plants and seeds; locating local food shelters to donate the harvest; scheduling deliveries; and putting the garden to bed.

12. Maintain the ability to be the content expert for sustainability activities on campus and campus spokesperson for sustainability-related topics.

13. Provide expertise and consultation on sustainability and environmental engagement and education to other colleges, businesses, municipalities, and non-profits as requested.

14. Coordinate and supervise sustainability-related special projects committees, i.e., The New Green Team; Advisor to Student Go Green! Club, and the Prairie.

15. Represent the College at various local, regional, and national sustainability conferences and organizations through participation and making presentations.

16. Maintain relationships with other organizations to understand best practices and support the Colleges’ reputation as a leader in sustainability. This includes serving on the sustainability task force for the South Metropolitan Higher Education Consortium; Advisory Council Member for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education; Network Affiliate of Illinois Green Economy Network, and member of the Chicagoland Network for Sustainability in Higher Education.

17. Assist in budget management, including allocated dollars and revolving grant monies.

18. Direct report to the Vice President of Administrative Services.



Education/Experience

Required:

  • Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in sustainability, environmental science, public policy, engineering, education, architecture, institutional planning or other related field.
  • Three (3) or more years of experience in sustainability programs, or programs in related field (such as planning, environmental or resource management, facilities, or grants with substantial relevant leadership expertise required).

Preferred :

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field and five years’ relevant experience required. Relevant experience in corporate, university, or non-profit setting as well as working with municipal leaders and executive leadership positions will be given strong consideration.
  • Relevant experience developing interdisciplinary, extra-curricular, and/or organizational programs and initiatives that comprehensively address the three tenants of sustainability.


Qualifications

In addition to the above requirements, the following skills are sought:



  • Understanding of sustainability theories as well as local, national, and global sustainability initiatives and best practices
  • Ability to develop and execute new programs within an institutional setting
  • Skill in development and management of programs, preferably for sustainability initiatives or similar programs
  • Understanding of how to institutionalize new sustainability efforts
  • Skill at problem solving, systems-thinking, and developing sustainability programs that support the institution’s strategic objectives and mission
  • Comfortable communicating with different stakeholders in the college as well as with business and municipal leaders in the community
  • Ability to manage multi-stakeholder teams and groups to move campus or community projects forward
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and comfort with public speaking
  • Strong team-building, relationship-building, and networking skills essential
