Nurse to patient ratios for day shifts are 1:4-5 and for night shifts are 1:5-6. Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience-related conditions. Nurses are required to titrate drips, including heparin titrated drip based on PTT. A charge nurse is present 24/7 and does not typically take an assignment unless staffing is short. A house supervisor is also available 24/7. Nurse aides and patient care technicians are on the unit, with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening shifts, and 1:10-12 at night. The unit rarely encounters COVID patients, but high flow is used for stable cases when necessary. Telemonitoring is managed house-wide, so nurses do not need to read strips. The unit follows a twelve-hour shift schedule, requiring staff to work every other weekend and holiday. Staff may be required to float to general units as needed, taking a full team or only performing skills they are competent in when floating outside the general unit. There is no specific scrub color requirement, but tattoos must be covered while on duty, and only ear piercings are allowed. Orientation consists of two days focusing on computer training, unit specifics, and hands-on patient care with a preceptor.
