Data Center Technical Operations Engineer

Kforce has a client in Sterling, VA that is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Technical Operations Engineer to support the critical infrastructure of a data center environment. This role requires a strong foundation in mechanical, electrical, and emergency systems, along with the ability to manage documentation and respond to alerts in real time. Mechanical Systems:

• Operate and maintain HVAC systems, including air handling units and cooling towers
• Perform preventive maintenance on pumps, fans, and fluid transfer systems
• Understand refrigeration cycles and evaporative cooling methods
• Conduct basic plumbing and piping inspections

• Manage three-phase power distribution and UPS operations
• Operate switchgear and circuit breakers
• Follow electrical safety protocols including lock-out/tag-out procedures
• Read and interpret electrical schematics and understand basic PLC functions

• Utilize Building Management Systems (BMS) and environmental monitoring tools
• Respond to alerts and manage data logging/trending for shift turnovers
• Support emergency systems including generators, ATS, and critical load management

• Maintain accurate work orders, preventive maintenance schedules, and equipment history
• Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and SOPs

• Use diagnostic tools such as multimeters and thermal imaging devices
• Operate building automation and maintenance management software
• Technical or trade school degree preferred
• Certifications in HVAC or electrical systems are a plus
• 1-5 years of experience in facility maintenance; data center experience preferred
• Background in emergency response is advantageous
• Demonstrate basic networking knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
