Starting pay for the Environmental Technician position is currently $25.0657/hour. The District offers the following benefits:

JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Environmental Technician Department: Laboratory Services

Job Purpose Statement: Perform duties to collect samples from various District and Industrial sites, calibrate test equipment, perform field testing, record data and observe, and submit samples to laboratory for analysis. Assist with activities involved with the District’s Compliance Program.

Reporting Structure: Supervisor, Laboratory Services

Essential Job Functions:
  1. Determine and utilize proper sample preservatives, bottle type and size required for sample collection, post sample code to bottle, collect sample from locations as scheduled.
  2. Calibrate test equipment, perform field tests such as pH, D.O., hydrogen sulfide, temperature and conductivity, and record test results accurately in log.
  3. Set up automatic field sampling equipment, program sampling steps and check for proper program operation.
  4. Communicate physical sampling problems, site conditions, and unusual sample observations concerning sample appearance with Compliance Department and appropriate lab personnel.
  5. Service and maintain automatic sampling equipment, including cleaning unit and replacement of pump hoses and defective parts, and/or preparation of repair requests for units sent out for service.
  6. Follow up with users to ensure corrective measures are being implemented and/or required information is submitted within required deadlines.
  7. Maintain effective communications with District and industry representatives on unusual site conditions and analytical test results.
  8. Compile, organize, and provide data for annual industrial waste report and review final report for accuracy.
  9. Interact and maintain effective relationships with industrial clients and adhere to site check-in and safety requirements.
  10. Perform landfill, river and other field sampling as necessary following established protocols.
  11. Identify and locate new sampling sites, Record GPS Coordinates, and complete manhole inspection form.
  12. Fill in on Laboratory benches as needed.
  13. Perform dye tests to verify sample location accuracy and prepare memo recording results.
  14. Follow state vehicle safety requirements.
  15. Train Technicians, as assigned.
Types of Machines, Tools, Equipment (Office and Industrial), Software used:
Company van, automatic sampler, a variety of test meters, power generator and well pump, GPS equipment, Trimble locator, calculator, hand tools and personal computer/tablet, common office equipment.

Job Qualification Requirements

Knowledge: Associate degree or equivalent in environmental studies or related field.

Experience: Environmental, laboratory or wastewater background.

Licenses/Certifications: Valid Driver’s License. Must be legally authorized to operate a motor vehicle for work-related purposes in the State of Illinois.
