Leading Electric Utility/Transmission & Substation

Location: Chicago, IL | 2–3 Days/Week Onsite + Field Visits

Contract Duration: 12-months with possible extension

Overview

Brooksource is partnering with a leading investor-owned electric utility serving the greater Chicago area to identify a senior-level Project Manager. This team manages a significant capital portfolio spanning substation, transmission, and relay & protection work, with annual program budgets reaching $200M+ per domain.

The team is in the midst of a long-term evolution toward program and portfolio management, but has immediate project delivery needs with new projects launching this year and next. This is a hands-on, execution-focused role for someone who thrives in a complex utility environment and can hit the ground running with minimal direction.

What You'll Be Doing

• Partner with engineering teams to identify priorities and build the project pipeline
• Define and manage project scope, schedule, and budget from initiation through closeout
• Develop and maintain financial forecasts and long-range plans in collaboration with finance and accounting
• Drive construction milestones to completion and ensure continuous monitoring and control
• Maintain project plans for both in-flight and newly initiated projects
• Provide regular status updates and performance reporting to leadership
• Navigate a matrixed organization and coordinate across internal and external stakeholders

What They're Looking For

Required

• Senior/seasoned Project Manager with a strong track record in complex capital programs
• Electric utility background — transmission and/or substation experience strongly preferred
• Solid financial acumen — ability to develop and maintain cost monitoring and forecasting independently
• Strong communicator and self-starter — someone who can figure things out without heavy hand-holding
• Comfortable working in the field in addition to the office environment

Preferred

• PMP certification
• Experience with Asset Suite (key platform used by the team)
• Construction management background, particularly on electric utility projects
• Program Manager background with ability to flex into project-level execution
• Familiarity with large capital program environments ($100M+)

About the Team

The System Performance group is organized into three domains:

• Substation — largest group, ~$200M annual program
• Transmission — ~$200M annual program, primary area of need for this role
• Relay & Protection — ~$100M annual program, primarily inside control buildings

The team is transitioning toward a program/portfolio management model over the next two years, meaning this person will have the opportunity to grow with the organization as it evolves.
