MACHINIST

Working from blueprints and written specifications, fabricates metal parts by the use of lathes, planers, shapers, milling machines, drill presses, measuring instruments and other machine or hand tools. May dismantle and assemble equipment for which a part is fabricated. Installs the proper cutting tool and sets the speed and feed of the machine. Inspects parts for wear, cracks or other defects, and reassembles after new parts have been fabricated
Typical Duties
- Studies blueprints and specifications of damaged metal parts.
- Plans sequence of work and orders materials from the stockroom.
- Lays out work, establishing the necessary reference points, center lines and guides.
- Measures with scale, calipers and micrometers; uses scriber, center punch, surface gauge and dividers to mark the metal.
- Clamps the work in the chuck, vise or other holding device. Installs the proper cutting tool and sets the speed and feed of the machine. Operates the machine tools (engine lathe, drill press, milling machine, planer, shaper, etc.) to cut the metal to the required size and shape.
- Dismantles machinery brought to the shop for repairs. Inspects parts for wear, cracks or other defects, and reassembles after new parts have been fabricated.
- Welds and brazes broken parts with either electric or gas equipment. Cuts steel plate with acetylene torch and builds up work metal with metalizing machine.

Reports to the Director of Plant Operations
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or GED (Must provide proof at the time of interview)
- Must possess a valid driver's license, (Must provide proof at the time of interview)
- Successful completion of an accredited Journeyman Machinist training or apprenticeship program, (Must provide proof at the time of interview) supplemented by one year full-time paid work experience as a Journeyman Machinist OR Five (5) years full-time paid work experience as a Machinist
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
- Knowledge of the properties of various types of steel, brass, bronze and other metals.
- Thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and procedures pertinent to the Machinist's trade.
- Skill in the execution of all related tasks and duties.
- Ability to set up and perform all operations on standard machine tools, working to tolerance of .0001 of an inch.
- Ability to read blueprints, plan the work sequence, select the proper tools and metals, and lay out the work
- This position occasionally requires various types of physical exertion, including, but not limited to lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving objects of moderate to heavy weight.
- This position requires moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County, for which the employee must provide his or her own adequate means of transportation.
