Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 weeks Shift: 12H Days Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum 1 year License: Active Illinois license required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: - Level 1 trauma experience - Previous travel experience (no first-time travelers) - Prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit Description: The unit has a total of 54 beds, including two semi-private rooms. The nurse-to-patient ratio during the day shift is 1:4-5, and 1:5-6 for night shifts. Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and various neuroscience cases, along with some medical overflow. RNs are required to titrate drips, including Heparin titrated drip based on PTT, and must have experience with Heparin gtt. There is a Charge Nurse available 24/7 who does not take an assignment unless nurse levels exceed the ratios. A House Supervisor is also present 24/7. Nurse aids and patient care techs are available on the unit, with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day, 1:9-10 in the evening, and 1:10-12 at night. RNs are not required to read telemetry strips, as telemetry responsibilities are covered by dedicated techs. The unit uses Phillips monitors throughout. Nurses work 12-hour shifts and will be required to work every other weekend, with both Saturday and Sunday considered the weekend. Holiday shifts will also be required every other holiday. Floating in rotation with the rest of the staff is expected. In the case of an urgent need, floating outside of the general unit will only involve skills that the nurse is competent in, and they will be paired with a nurse trained for that particular unit. There is no specific scrub color requirement, but tattoos must be covered while on duty and piercings are limited to ears only. Unit-specific orientation includes two days of training with an educator and a preceptor while caring for patients.
