Utility Locator Public Works - Streets Division

The Maintenance Worker– Utility Locator performs precision utility locating of electrical, sewer, and water lines for all divisions of Public Works.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Review Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators (JULIE) requests and prioritize routing of those requests.
• Work with GIS to update streetlight and underground utility mapping systems.
• Operate line tracing equipment with four different tracing signal frequencies and inductive/conductive modes.
• Review City records to aid in locating underground utilities.
• Operate a wide variety of equipment and vehicles of various classifications as qualified and assigned, including dump trucks, tractors, and other equipment.
• Operate various hand and power tools as required.
• Drive a dump truck with snowplow and spreader in performing snow and ice control duties, as needed.
• Assist in snow removal operations as required.
• Respond to 24-hour electrical emergency call-back.

Qualifications: A High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Illinois Driver’s License and Valid Illinois Commercial Driver’s License with related endorsements are required. Possession of a Flagger’s Certification may be required. Must have extensive knowledge of line tracing equipment, drafting and GIS and magnetic locators, radio detection and Metrotech locating equipment and basic computer skills. Prior experience of utility locating preferred.

Salary: $29.95 starting pay with wages increase up to $43.05 per CBA
