ENA offers a flexible hybrid work schedule that allows employees the opportunity to work from the office two days a week and at home three days a week. We are headquartered in Schaumburg, Illinois.
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Controller oversees Financial Planning and Analysis and Accounting functions, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely delivery of all transactional accounting functions. This position is responsible for highly complex areas such as budget, cash flow, financial forecasting, financial analysis, project management, investment priorities, and risk management. The Controller is responsible for developing key strategies that support the Association’s growth and serves as a strategic business partner across the association. As we rebuild our finance function, you’ll play a key role in designing its foundation—hiring future team members, refining processes, and driving long-term financial stability across the organization.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage all finance and accounting operations, including ENA’s budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, short-term and long-range financial planning processes as well as the A/P, A/R, monthly close and reconciliation processes.
- Provide direction for the development of the annual operating and capital budgets for all ENA entities, including ENA, the ENA Foundation, ensuring collaboration with all stakeholders, prudent financial management and advancing organizational growth.
- Serve as a strategic partner to the Leadership team, collaborating with department/division leaders as they develop business plans, providing support to translate financial results into actionable financial insights and recommendations.
- Prepare Board and Executive-level financial presentations, including variance analyses and key performance metrics. Serves as the primary staff liaison to the ENA Finance Committee.
- Provide guidance to ENA councils and chapters supporting their financial management requirements and ensuring necessary compliance to maintain ENA’s group exemption status.
- Participate in financial modeling, pricing strategy and scenario planning for programs/products or revising content/recasting deliverables through a collaborative process with key internal stakeholders.
- Ensure adherence to internal controls, segregation of duties, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations, including compliance and recognition for government contracts and private grants.
- Oversee cash flow forecasting, investment strategies, asset and reserves management.
- Provide guidance and oversight for the annual audits for ENA and ENAF and is responsible for tax returns and regulatory reporting.
- Partner with Human Resources to collaborate on financial planning and plan administration for the Association’s 401(k) plan, including primary contact with vendors, fund disbursement management and fiduciary responsibility.
- Maintain ENA’s finance policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and compliance with U.S. GAAP. Oversee compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations and reporting requirements, including monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements.
- Lead finance-related training for managers and staff on budgeting, reporting, and compliance expectations.
- Collaborate with IT to identify and implement automation of repeatable accounting processes to increase efficiency and reduce fixed costs.
- Leads, coaches, and mentors team members by facilitating onboarding, supporting career growth, and identifying professional development opportunities to enhance staff performance and engagement.
- Promotes a culture of empowerment and accountability by delegating responsibilities, setting clear expectations, and providing consistent, constructive feedback to support individual and team success.
- Collaborates with Human Resources on key talent management processes including recruitment, onboarding, retention, professional development, and performance evaluation to ensure a high-performing and engaged team.
- Demonstrates personal accountability and integrity by owning individual responsibilities, honoring commitments, and reflecting ENA’s values through actions and decision-making that positively impact the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, with at least 4 years of demonstrated experience in a leadership role such as Controller or Director of Finance.
- Experience in an Association, not for profit, mission-based institution.
- Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, non-profit accounting, financial management, grant administration, and audit financial systems.
- Proven ability to lead budgeting, forecasting, and financial reporting processes.
- Proficiency in Great Plains, Adaptive Insights (or similar), Salesforce CRM/AMS (or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite.
Desired:
- Master’s degree in related field.
- CPA or CMA license

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
This position is an exempt/salaried position. The targeted salary range is $135k-$165k annually. Compensation is determined based on a range of factors, including experience, education, certifications or specialized training, skill level and operational needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. Requires ability to communicate verbally and in writing in an exchange of information; collect, compile and prepare work documents; set-up and maintain work files, participate in meetings. Use of the computer, with repetitive motion, is approximately 95%.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work is performed in a hybrid office environment. Occasional travel may be required.
