The Pharmacy Technician - Certified under the supervision of the Pharmacist, facilitates safe and effective drug therapy to Hospital's patient population from newborn to geriatric.
Functions and Duties:
- Assists the Pharmacist in dispensing procedures for completion of medication orders.
- Fills and exchanges unit dose medication carts.
- Fills and restocks Omnicell, Floor Stock, Department requests.
- Refill Crash Carts, Medication Trays and processes charges.
- Prepares IV Admixtures in an aseptic manner for check by the Pharmacist.
- Answers telephone and refers questions of a professional nature to the Pharmacist.
- Processes patient Charges and Credits.
- Check in Purchase Orders and restock inventories.
- Repackage products from Bulk to Unit Dose packages.
- Clean Pharmacy equipment and storage areas as needed.
- Maintain equipment and all areas within the Department in a clean, neat, and orderly manner.
- Attends Department and Hospital meetings as designated by Director of Pharmacy.
- Assist in maintaining the security of the Pharmacy Department and Medication Inventory.
- Assists in the timely delivery of medications and picking up Physician Orders.
- Alert Pharmacist of drug outages or insufficient supplies.
- Participates in ongoing quality improvement programs
- Assists in monthly inspections for outdated material in Pharmacy, Patient Care Areas, Crash Carts, and Medication Trays
- Demonstrates and promotes positive relations with all internal and external customers, staff and co-workers in a friendly, caring and timely manner
- Responsible for becoming cross-trained in all technician roles in order to provide assistance in all areas of the Pharmacy
- Completes continuing education programs and competencies as required by the State of Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Pharmacy Department, Hospital, and National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.
- Ensures patient confidentiality and maintains knowledge of HIPAA guidelines.
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Graduate of an accredited high school, or equivalent
Experience
- N/A
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
- Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician License - required
- National Certification Pharmacy Technician - required
Skills and Abilities
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Medical terminology background
- Proficient pharmacy computer knowledge
- Familiar with unit dose packaging, IV Admixture and drug dispensing
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to sit, walk and/or stand for prolonged periods of time
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) (mask, gown, gloves) when required.
- Frequent keyboard use and data entry.
- Ability to lift moderate to heavy objects.
- Able to push / pull carts.
- Pays close attention to detail.
