Job Summary
Participate in the implementation of the total child care program of the facility, working in cooperation with other Associates and under general supervision from higher level personnel.Duties & Responsibilities
- Curriculum
- Assist the head teacher in the development of programs and operational procedures which focus on child safety and the promotion of development in all areas (cognitive, language/literacy, social, emotional, fine and large motor and creative).
- Participate in weekly curriculum planning sessions with other team members and implements a developmentally appropriate curriculum that meets licensing requirements and NAEYC standards.
- Assist the head teacher in the development and implementation of developmental assessment tools and observe the children to evaluate their developmental patterns and adjustment to the program and its activities.
- Prepare reports on the growth and development of assigned children in preparation for parent-teacher conferences.
- Keep head teacher informed of the program changes, parents’ concerns, supplies and equipment needs, and any problem that might arise during the head teachers absence.
- Adult Supervision
- In the absence of the head teacher, supervise the activities of and provide training for lower level employees (staff, student and intern).
- Assist head teacher in the preparation and implementation of professional development activities for the local, state, and national child care communities.
- Daily Caregiving
- Provide for the physical needs of the children, such as supervising feeding, dressing, naps, and other activities.
- Maintain daily communication and cooperation with parents of children, e.g., child's mental and physical condition, changes in daily schedule, or child's participation in activities.
- Work with other team members to maintain an orderly and attractive physical environment conducive to the optimal growth and development of children.
- Lab School Mission
- Provide feedback to the head teacher on the performance of student interns as it relates to interactions with children and implementation of lesson plans.
- Cooperate with research activities by being aware of research activities scheduled for the classroom on a daily basis and by assisting researchers develop rapport with the children in order to facilitate their willing participation.
- Assist head teachers and associate director in implementing in-service and pre-service professional development activities conducted by the CDL.
- Participate in regularly scheduled staff development workshops in order to meet licensing guidelines and NAEYC standards.
- Assume responsibilities of the head teacher as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Possession of credentials required by Illinois Department of Children and Family Services for employment as a Child Care Worker in a licensed child care facility.

2. A. Bachelor’s degree in child development, education, or related fields, including 18 semester hours of credit for course work directly related to child development and/or child care**, of which 6 semester hours must be for the period from birth to age six
OR
B. two years of experience comparable to that gained at the lower level of this series and 18 additional semester hours of credit for college course work directly related to child development and/or child care**
**Note: Courses that cover the social, emotional, intellectual, and physical development of young children and/or courses relating specifically to the group care and education of young children; e.g., curriculum, programming, pre-school teaching methods, discipline and child management, observation of children, working with parents, health, nutrition and safety, and supervised teaching experience for which credit is earned (such as student teaching, clinical experience, or practicum).
Must possess within one (1) month of hire date, and maintain, current certification in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the Heimlich maneuver, first aid for choking infants. CPR certification must be specific for all age groups served, i.e., infant (birth to 12 months), child (one to eight years) and adult (eight years and older).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- 1. Staff shall be at least 19 years of age.
- 2. Staff shall be able to demonstrate the skill and competence necessary to contribute to each child's physical, intellectual, personal, emotional, and social development. Factors contributing to the attainment of this standard include:
- a) Emotional maturity when working with children;
- b) Cooperation with the purposes and services of the program;
- c) Respect for children and adults;
- d) Flexibility, understanding and patience;
- e) Physical (includes frequent bending & stooping, reaching above shoulder level, kneeling, balancing, keyboarding, squatting, crawling, crouching, lifting up to 35 pounds with occasional weights up to 50 pounds) and mental health that do not interfere with child care responsibilities;
- f) Good personal hygiene;
- g) Frequent interaction with children;
- h) Listening skills, availability and responsiveness to children;
- i) Sensitivity to children's socioeconomic, cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds, and individual needs and capabilities:
- j) Use of positive discipline and guidance techniques; and
- k) Ability to provide an environment in which children can feel comfortable, relaxed, happy and involved in play, recreation and other activities.
- 3. Child care staff, in addition to meeting the requirements listed above, shall generally demonstrate skill and competence necessary to assume direct responsibility for child care including:
- a) Skills to help children meet their developmental and emotional needs;
- b) Skills in planning, directing, and conducting programs that meet the children's basic needs; and
- c) Oral and written communication skills adequate to appropriately communicate with parents regarding the growth and development of each child.
- 4. Staff shall also be responsible for supervising persons assigned to assist their group who are not similarly qualified.
- 5. Child care staff shall be willing to participate in activities leading to professional growth in child development and education, and in training related to the specific needs of the children served. Each child care staff member shall participate in 20 clock hours of in-service training per year.
- 6. Newly employed staff shall submit a report of a physical examination completed no more than six months prior to employment which provides evidence that they are free of communicable disease, including active tuberculosis, and physical or mental conditions that could affect their ability to perform assigned duties. This examination shall include a test for tuberculosis by the Mantoux method.
- 7. Staff shall have physical re-examinations every two years and whenever communicable disease or illness is suspected.
- 8. Staff shall hold current certification or obtain such within 1 month of hire date, in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the Heimlich maneuver, first aid for choking infants. Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 3474 - Child Development Supervisor position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the posting closes.The collective bargaining agreement sets a wage of $40,521. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
Out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position. Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois Driver's License or state of Illinois ID card. Failure to produce the required documentation within 180 calendar days will result in immediate termination of employment. Work for this position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility Policy.
