Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory
Are you a Medical Laboratory Scientist interested in veterinary medicine and animal species? The College of Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is seeking up to two medical laboratory scientists to serve in Academic Hourly positions to provide comprehensive clinical diagnostic and research services in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory on an as-needed basis. This position provides an opportunity to learn and be involved in comparative hematology, endocrinology, urinalysis, parasitology and clinical chemistry and in the development of new diagnostic tests applicable to animal species utilizing state of the art chemistry and hematologic analyzers. Species served include dogs, cats, horses, food and fiber species, birds, reptiles, companion exotic mammals, and zoological species. Current laboratory hours for sample receiving are Mon - Fri from 8 am to 10 pm, Sat & Sun 5 pm to 10 pm, and some holidays (hours vary). The hourly wage is competitive (see below), and benefits are not included.
Job Summary
Provide comprehensive clinical diagnostic and research services in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory in the Veterinary Diagnostic LaboratoryDuties & Responsibilities
- Perform comparative hematology, clinical chemistry, blood bank, urinalysis, and hemostasis testing on samples submitted for clinical and research cases according to laboratory standards to maintain accreditation by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and to comply with the Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) Act for investigators
- Receive and accession specimens for laboratory analysis
- Preparation of cytology and fluid specimens for pathologist review
- Communicate with clinical pathologists, clinicians, professional students, and biomedical investigators
- Coordinate research services for biomedical investigations
- Other duties as assigned

Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science or a closely related field. Experience with state-of-the-art clinical laboratory analyzers ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) Board Certification
Preferred Qualifications
1-2 years of laboratory experience. Expertise in quality control and laboratory information systems with interest in test development and application.
Appointment Information
This is a part-time Academic Hourly position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 8/15/2025. The budgeted hourly wage for this position is between $35.00 to $40.00 per hour. Final salary offered will be determined by a thorough assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
Up to two positions are available; each opening is for an Academic Hourly, as-needed position. Each position is intended to address laboratory staffing gaps due to vacation and sick leave absences and to provide regular, rotating Saturday day laboratory coverage. Shifts will include day and swing shifts that span weekdays, weekends, and some holidays. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to provide input on scheduling, though adaptability (especially in covering unexpected absences due to illness) will be needed. The lab anticipates up to 72 hours per position per month will regularly be available, though the exact number will vary depending on need.
