Materials Characterization Technician (Metals)
Step into a day dedicated to metals, microscopes, and meaningful results
You clock in and power up the SEM. A fracture surface under the stereoscope tells a story you capture and document. You polish and etch a specimen, then photograph its microstructure with a photomicroscope—or coordinate with imaging support to produce the perfect photomicrograph. Between samples, you run a quick chemical analysis, audit a product lot, and close the loop with a concise report the production team can act on.
What you’ll do
- Examine and test metallic samples using a scanning electron microscope and/or stereoscope to assess physical properties and microstructural features.
- Measure strength, hardness, elasticity, toughness, and other properties; record and document fracture surfaces.
- Prepare specimens through polishing and etching; capture images with a photomicroscope or direct technical photography personnel to take, develop, and mount photomicrographs.
- Perform chemical analyses on parts to support material verification and investigations.
- Conduct audits and product tests to verify conformance.
- Draft clear, simple reports summarizing test methods, observations, and results.
What you bring
- Associate’s degree from a two‑year college/technical school, or a comparable blend of education and experience.
- Hands-on experience operating a scanning electron microscope and a stereoscope.
- Background in a laboratory setting performing similar work.
- Comfort with computers and common operating systems.
Physical demands and environment
This role is active. You’ll regularly stand, walk, use hands/fingers to handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb (ascend/descend) or balance to heights that may require a ladder or lift, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl in confined spaces, and communicate by talking or hearing. Sitting occurs occasionally. You may occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds. Close vision and color vision are regularly required. You may be occasionally exposed to outside weather and risk of electrical shock. Work is typically in a factory environment that is usually very loud, with potential exposure to hazardous materials and/or greasy or slippery floors.
