DPNS Position Announcement

The Division of Parks and Natural Spaces (DPNS) is a new administrative unit at the University of Illinois that oversees Allerton Park and the Illinois Arboretum. The DPNS aims to improve physical spaces, increase community engagement, and grow partnerships.

Title : Division of Parks and Natural Spaces – Extra Help Grounds Worker

Locations : PRIMARY LOCATION - University of Illinois Arboretum, 1800 S Lincoln Ave, Urbana, IL 61801

Secondary Location - Allerton Park & Retreat Center, 515 Old Timber Rd., Monticello, IL 61856

Position Description : Main job duties include general landscape maintenance (60%) including but not limited to: weeding, mulching, watering, planting, raking, digging, pruning, trimming, edging, string trimming and other duties as assigned (10%). Some road work and other project-based work as assigned (10%). Park grounds staff will also help with event setup and cleanup (10%) as well as general park maintenance tasks such as cleaning park bathrooms and emptying garbage cans around the grounds (10%).

Qualifications : Applicants working towards a degree in horticulture/landscape architecture or related field preferred but not required. Experience using power equipment (string trimmer, mower, tractor, etc.) Experience in outdoor/park district/conservation/landscaping work preferred. Position will require working outdoors under potentially adverse conditions. Successful applicants must have good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently and in a team situation.

Requirements : Successful applicants will be:

• Working ~37.5 hrs./week and some nights/weekends/holidays
• Willing to travel between two separate University of Illinois Parks
• Able to responsibly operate power equipment such as string trimmer, mower, tractor, ATV, etc.
• Have a valid driver license and provide own transportation to work site
• Flexible and able to work in a fast-paced work environment
• Able to lift and carry up to 70 pounds and perform rigorous physical activity
• Dependable and have a desire to work outdoors
• Able to work in hot, wet, humid and buggy conditions

Salary: $15/hour
