Painter, Full-Time

This position is an on-campus, full-time, 12-month appointment based in Champaign, Illinois covered by the Professional Support Staff (PSS) Union with an annual salary of $39,624.00.

The Painter is responsible for painting walls, equipment, buildings, bridges, and other structural surfaces, using brushes, rollers, and spray guns. The Painter may remove old paint to prepare the surface prior to painting, as well as mix colors or oils to obtain the desired color or consistency. Apply/repair plasterboard or other wallboard to ceilings or interior walls of buildings.

The Painter is a full-time Professional Support Staff appointment on a schedule established by the Associate Director. Overtime or an altered work schedule is possible on an as-needed basis. At times, minimal supervision is provided; the Painter must be able to work independently and accurately prioritize tasks.

Essential Job Functions

  • Read work orders or receive instructions from supervisors in order to determine work requirements.
  • Coordinate with facilities staff to schedule painting projects, minimizing disruption to campus operations.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of material.
  • Responsible for ordering supplies and maintaining inventory of paint supplies and tools.
  • Paint a variety of surfaces (e.g., buildings, parking lot line stripping and marking, floors, lockers, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining facilities in an attractive, safe, and usable condition.
  • Cover surfaces with drop cloths or masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
  • Erect scaffolding and set up ladders, to work above ground level.
  • Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, and other finishes to equipment, buildings, and/or other structures, using brushes, spray guns, or rollers.
  • Fill cracks, holes, and joints with caulk, putty, plaster, or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
  • Apply primers or sealers to prepare new surfaces, such as bare wood or metal, for finish coats.
  • Remove fixtures such as pictures, doorknobs, lamps, and electric switch covers prior to painting.
  • Wash and treat surfaces with oil, turpentine, mildew remover, or other preparations, and sand rough spots to ensure that finishes will adhere properly.
  • Mix and match colors of paint, stain, or varnish with oil and thinning and drying additives in order to obtain desired colors and consistencies.
  • Fit and fasten wallboard or drywall into position on wood or metal frameworks, using glue, nails, or screws.
  • Measure and cut openings in panels or tiles for electrical outlets, windows, vents, plumbing and other fixtures, using keyhole saws or other cutting tools.
  • Assist in the interviewing, hiring, and training of student and part-time hourly painters.
  • Oversee scheduling, work performance, and end-product quality of part-time painters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional painting experience, preferably in a commercial or institutional environment.
  • Knowledge of the following, but not limited to, machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance:
    • Paint sprayers; Airless spray equipment; Power brushes; Spray guns; Striping machines.
    • Power sanders; Disk sanders; Electric paint removers; Paint stripping equipment; Sanders
    • Putty knives; Drywall taping knives; Patching knives; Spackling knives; Corner knives; Joint knives; Wipe-down knives, A variety of aerial lifts, such as man lifts, scissor lifts, and bucket lifts
  • Prospective new hires will successfully complete a post offer, pre-employment criminal background check with fingerprinting. The background check review includes, but is not limited to, exclusionary offenses per the Illinois School Code and Title IV of the Higher Education Act.
  • Ability to safely perform physical activities such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.
  • Familiarity with safe handling of paints, solvents, and hazardous materials.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work. Proficient in interpreting campus layouts and basic technical drawings
  • Ability to lift and move objects and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds with no assistance.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurability to drive for the College.
  • Verbal and mathematical skills sufficient to complete work orders, accurately calculate measurements, and perform other duties are necessary.
  • Experience working with and serving individuals from various backgrounds.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and accurately prioritize tasks.
  • Able to operate Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, and required to learn and use Team Dynamix software for communicating with clients and managing incoming work orders; must be adaptable to new technology as systems evolve.
  • In an effort to comply with SURS return-to-work restrictions for employers (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5), candidates for employment at Parkland College must either not be a SURS annuitant or must be willing to suspend his/her SURS annuity upon employment. This applies to all SURS annuitants except those receiving their annuity under either the Self-Managed Plan (SMP) or by lump sum payment.
