Bartender

Matilda is a vibrant Mexican-Peruvian restaurant located in the heart of River North, Chicago. Position SummaryThe Bartender is responsible for delivering exceptional hospitality while preparing and serving high-quality cocktails, wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages. The ideal candidate is knowledgeable, personable, detail-oriented, and capable of maintaining efficiency and accuracy during high-volume service periods.
This role requires a strong understanding of classic cocktails, spirits, and service standards while contributing to a positive team culture and guest-focused atmosphere.
Key Responsibilities Guest Experience- Create a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for all guests.
- Provide knowledgeable recommendations on cocktails, spirits, wine, beer, and menu offerings.
- Build relationships with guests and create memorable experiences that encourage repeat visits.
- Handle guest concerns professionally and escalate issues when necessary.
- Prepare and serve beverages according to company recipes and standards.
- Maintain consistency, accuracy, and presentation of all beverages.
- Execute specialty cocktails, seasonal menus, and featured promotions.
- Monitor alcohol consumption and comply with all responsible alcohol service laws.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and fully stocked bar throughout service.
- Complete opening, running, and closing side work assignments.
- Assist with inventory counts, stocking, and product rotation.
- Ensure all garnishes, syrups, juices, and batch products meet quality standards.
- Minimize waste and follow proper portioning procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with servers, support staff, management, and kitchen teams.
- Communicate guest needs, service issues, and operational concerns promptly.
- Support overall restaurant operations during busy periods.
- Participate in pre-shift meetings, trainings, and menu education sessions.
- Follow all Illinois liquor laws and responsible alcohol service practices.
- Maintain sanitation standards in accordance with local health regulations.
- Adhere to company policies, cash handling procedures, and POS standards.
- Minimum 2 years of bartending experience in a high-volume restaurant, cocktail bar, or hospitality environment.
- Strong knowledge of spirits, wine, beer, and classic cocktails.
- Experience with Toast POS preferred.
- Ability to multitask and maintain composure under pressure.
- Excellent communication and guest service skills.
- Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Illinois BASSET Certification (or ability to obtain before employment).
- Experience with craft cocktail programs.
- Knowledge of Mexican, Peruvian, or Latin American spirits and ingredients.
- Fine dining or upscale casual restaurant experience.
- Wine and agave spirit knowledge is a plus.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, reach, and work in a fast-paced environment.
