Position Overview
This position is accountable for the maintenance and operation of all traffic signals, highway lights, and flashing beacons in the district.
Essential Functions
- Responsible for the maintenance of traffic signal, flasher, highway lighting, and other electrical device installations ensuring their proper operation according to state and federal standards.
- Reviews and ensures the proper timing of traffic signal controllers and coordinated traffic signal systems to ensure that traffic flows as smoothly as possible.
- Supervises the traffic signal maintenance portion and the highway lighting portion of the electrical maintenance contracts, which entails providing technical guidance and invoice payment review and approval. Reviews and processes invoices submitted by municipalities, where shared signal financial agreements exist
- Responsible for the administration of the contract maintenance for traffic signal and lighting systems throughout the district to ensure that the timing sequences that are required are implemented.
- Inspects traffic signals equipment used in highway construction projects to ensure that they are functioning in accordance to the standards set by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Street and Highways.
- Keeps abreast of developments in the traffic signal, lighting, and related areas so that the district may avail itself of updates in lighting and traffic signal technology.
- Performs all duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.

- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Strong human relations skills with the ability to create harmonious relationships.

- 24 hour on call availability.
- Successful completion of a background screening.

- This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois
Governmental Ethics Act (5 ILCS 420/4A et seq.) requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission. (See Executive Order 15-09) Fines and penalties apply to untimely filings.
