Swiss‑Type CNC Lathe Technician A Day in the Life

Your day starts at a clean, climate-controlled workcell where a Citizen, Star, or Tsugami Swiss lathe is queued with the next order. You load bar stock, verify the correct tooling package, and run a first-article—dialing in tool wear offsets until the gauges agree. Throughout the shift, you keep parts flowing, watch cycle performance, and collaborate with quality and engineering to hit customer specs without sacrificing throughput.

What You'll Do

• Run Swiss-style CNC lathes to manufacture tight-tolerance components in a fast-paced production setting.
• Adjust wear offsets and monitor tool condition to sustain dimensional accuracy and surface finish.
• Interpret drawings, blueprints, GD&T callouts, and work instructions to set up each job for success.
• Perform first-piece, in-process, and final checks using micrometers, calipers, indicators, and other precision metrology.
• Load raw materials, confirm proper tooling and holders are installed, and keep machines supplied.
• Troubleshoot chatter, chip control, finish, and dimensional issues to reduce downtime and scrap.
• Record production and inspection data with accuracy and completeness.
• Maintain a tidy, safe, and organized work area.
• Partner with quality, engineering, and production to meet delivery, cost, and quality targets.

About You

• 1+ year of hands-on Swiss CNC operating experience within precision manufacturing.
• Familiarity with Citizen, Star, Tsugami, or comparable Swiss turning equipment.
• Comfortable reading prints and understanding GD&T.
• Proficient with precision gauges: micrometers, calipers, indicators, and related tools.
• Strong mechanical aptitude with solid troubleshooting instincts.
• Self-directed and reliable while consistently meeting production goals.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Bonus Points

• Prior setup experience.
• Background machining medical, aerospace, or other high-precision parts.
• Knowledge of CNC programming/editing is a plus, not a requirement.
