Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Corrections is looking for a highly driven Office Assistant for the Mailroom at Logan Correctional Center. The individual in this role will perform a variety of difficult clerical duties including inspecting all incoming and outgoing mail. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, task oriented, has excellent organizational skills, has the physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and be mobile much of the workday. Additionally, the candidate selected for this position will perform a variety of responsible clerical and office support functions requiring independent judgment and action. This would include record processing, operating common office equipment, and processing outgoing and incoming mail for individuals in custody. An extensive knowledge of office practices, procedures, and programs would be a plus for our ideal candidate. Essential Functions

  • Processes and inspects all incoming individual in custody mail weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Processes money orders and inspects all outgoing individual in custody mail adhering to administrative directives.
  • Receives and distributes all incoming institutional mail.
  • Distributes mail of individuals in custody who have been discharged, paroled, or transferred.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school and one (1) year of related office experience.

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires ability to pass the IDOC/IDJJ background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen. The use of unauthorized drugs by an employee, regardless of position held, is prohibited.
  • Applicants are required to abide by all vaccine and/or other medical standards as set out by the employer.
  • This position is considered medium work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver's license.
  • Required to utilize digital technology, tools, platforms, and processes in managing and supporting various digital enhancements for greater efficiency, productivity, and digital transformation efforts within the department.
