Certified Prosthetist Orthotist

Department: DME Prosthetics and Orthotics Reports To: Director, Ancillary Services

Job Purpose:

The Certified Prosthetist Orthotist is responsible for evaluating, designing, fabricating, and fitting custom molded orthosis to treat a wide range of pathologies.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Works closely with doctors to ensure the best patient outcomes.

Evaluates patients by assessing range of motion, muscle strength, functional goals, and individual expectations to develop appropriate treatment plans.

Designs custom prosthetic and orthotic devices to maximize function and support activities of daily living, collaborating with other Orthotists for input on optimal designs.

Measures and molds patients for orthoses and prostheses, ensuring accuracy and comfort.

Explains the prosthetic or orthotic process to patients and family members, providing clear instructions for use and care.

Fabricates orthotic devices, including pouring molds, stripping molds, and refining as needed based on device requirements.

Vacuum forms plastic over molds and completes fabrication by trimming, adding joints, contouring metal bars, and securing velcro straps.

Fits patients with prosthetic or orthotic devices, making necessary adjustments to ensure proper fit and functionality. Provides both oral and printed instructions for patients and families.

Ensures forms are accurately completed with correct codes and descriptions and obtains patient signatures to maintain inventory tracking and support billing processes.

Documents patient charts thoroughly to include all necessary information for compliance and reimbursement purposes.

Provides follow-up care for delivered devices to address body changes, pressure areas, functional problems, or breakages, ensuring long-term success and patient satisfaction.

Fits complex off-the-shelf orthoses, modifying them as needed through contouring bars, heating and flaring plastic, and sewing materials to achieve optimal results.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university.

At least four years of experience in a similar position and/or performing similar tasks preferred

ABC Certified Orthotist required

Licensed Orthotist in the state of IL required

Basic working knowledge of Microsoft and Google suites

Environmental/Working Conditions:

Working environment is in an office/clinic setting.

Physical/Mental Demands:

Sit, stand, walk, stoop or kneel, crouch or crawl, and climb stairs for extended periods of time.

Requires frequent lifting, carrying and/or moving heavier objects up to 40 pounds.

Finger dexterity for typing on a keyboard and using a mouse for extended periods of time; ability to twist hands or wrists repetitively.

Good balance.

Possess full range of motion in shoulders and arms, including reaching above or below the shoulder.

Vision (e.g., depth perception, color vision, strong vision up close).
