Batch Mixer

Chicago Heights, IL

Job Title: Batch Mixer - Chicago Heights

Job Description

This role focuses on safely formulating and mixing chemical batches by following detailed batch sheets and standard operating procedures. You will handle both liquid and powdered raw materials, operate production equipment such as reactors, pumps, mixers, and milling machines, and maintain accurate records for each batch. The position starts with hands-on labor tasks and progresses into full responsibility for batch mixing and chemical formulation, with comprehensive training provided by supervisors.

Responsibilities

  • Attend daily safety meetings and actively apply safety practices throughout all tasks.
  • Receive and review batch sheets to understand formulation requirements, quantities, and process steps.
  • Formulate chemical batches by accurately weighing and measuring raw materials according to batch specifications.
  • Handle liquid and powdered materials from drums, totes, and bags, ensuring safe and controlled transfer.
  • Pour and place materials into reactors while monitoring proper loading sequences and quantities.
  • Check and monitor gauges, controls, and HMI/touch screen control systems to ensure proper equipment operation.
  • Follow all standard operating procedures (SOPs) and production guidelines during batch preparation and processing.
  • Keep detailed and accurate records of batch formulations, process parameters, and production outcomes.
  • Work with batch sizes up to 4,000 gallons, ensuring consistency and quality throughout the mixing process.
  • Monitor running machinery such as pumps, mixers, and milling machines, and respond promptly to any irregularities.
  • Notify maintenance immediately if any equipment or process issues arise, and support safe resolution of problems.
  • Perform housekeeping duties while machines are running or when batches are completed, including sweeping, cleaning, and maintaining a tidy work area.
  • Communicate batch records, production status, and any issues to the next shift and supervisors to ensure smooth handoffs.
  • Work side by side with a helper, providing guidance on basic job duties, safety practices, and proper procedures.
  • Start in a labor-focused capacity to learn the operation and progressively move into full formulating and batch mixing responsibilities.
  • Assist with packaging, staging, and preparing orders as needed to support overall production requirements.
  • Collaborate closely with supervisors and team members to meet production goals and maintain quality standards.

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years of manufacturing experience in a production environment.
  • At least 3 years of experience in blending, formulating, chemical operating, or batch mixing.
  • Experience working in chemical or pharmaceutical manufacturing environments (preferred over food production).
  • Proficiency with HMI, touch screen, and control screen systems for operating production equipment.
  • Ability to accurately weigh and measure raw materials and follow detailed batch instructions.
  • Capability to safely handle liquid and powdered materials from drums, totes, and bags.
  • Comfort working with large batch sizes, including batches up to 4,000 gallons.
  • Strong attention to detail for following SOPs and maintaining precise batch records.
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with helpers, other shifts, and supervisors.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to safety procedures and protocols.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a chemical or pharmaceutical production facility is highly preferred.
  • Experience operating reactors, pumps, mixers, and milling machines.
  • Familiarity with batch documentation, recordkeeping, and shift-to-shift communication.
  • Ability to multitask between production, housekeeping, and packaging or staging tasks.
  • Willingness to start with labor-intensive tasks and grow into advanced batch mixing responsibilities.
  • Flexibility to support various production functions, including packaging and order preparation.

Why Work Here?

You will join a modern, safety-focused organization that invests in clean, well-maintained facilities and structured processes. The company offers strong benefits and emphasizes employee well-being, with temperature-controlled environments and clear operating procedures. You will receive thorough training, opportunities to expand your skills in chemical manufacturing, and the chance to work in facilities that balance organized operations with robust production activity.

Work Environment

The work takes place in temperature-controlled chemical manufacturing facilities that include production floors and warehouse areas. One site features a modern, very clean, and recently remodeled environment with a smaller workforce, highly organized inventory, and fewer lines, kettles, fillers, and blenders. The other site is larger, with more production lines and a higher volume of work, creating a more fast-paced and sometimes chaotic environment, but it remains in good condition and is also temperature controlled. Both locations place a strong emphasis on safety, with security checkpoints at the larger facility and multiple break rooms available for employees. Operations at both sites involve manufacturing chemical products, bottling, staging, and shipping, with chemicals that are described as not harmful. You will work on structured shifts, with opportunities on first, second, and third shifts, following a Monday–Friday schedule for first and second shifts and a Sunday–Thursday night schedule for third shift.
