About the Role
Infrastructure Engineering Inc. (I E I) Chicago Corporate Office is looking for a Civil Engineer 1 to join our Team! We are a leading engineering firm known for quality, responsiveness, and a proven track record of success as a Prime civil engineering firm. As a Civil Engineer 1, you will perform professional engineering work, including developmental assignments involving the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria in carrying out routine engineering tasks under close supervision.
The primary responsibility of the Civil Engineer 1 is to manage project engineering and document control from the site field office, concentrating on the schedule, budget updates, correspondence logs, and Requests for Information (RFIs). Essential Duties/Functions and Responsibilities
- Ability to comprehend and apply advanced calculus, modern algebra, and statistical theory principles.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints.
- Actively engage clients consistently to maintain and promote work.
- Analyze and interpret engineering and construction documents, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.
- Analyzes and interprets various technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form.
- Assists in preparing and presenting technical information to colleagues and clients.
- Assists Project, Design, and/or Office Managers as requested.
- Handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Intermediate to advanced personal computer skills, including electronic mail, routine database activity, MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams), various CAD Software and graphics experience required.
- Organizes and maintains project files and documentation.
- Performs construction observation and prepares the appropriate documentation.
- Prepares design computations, plans, and related construction documents.
- Prepares engineering and design documents using computer-assisted engineering and design software and equipment.
- Prepares quantity calculations and cost estimates.
- Prepares reports, specifications, studies, and permits.
- Promotes and fosters excellence in all aspects of securing work for the firm and the delivery of services.

- Minimum 1-3 years of relevant transportation design experience - including but not limited to roadway, highway, and/or bridges
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required
- Master's degree in civil engineering a plus
- EIT is preferred
- Fundamental knowledge of structural engineering
- Strong team player in a multi-disciplinary environment who can work on and contribute to several projects simultaneously
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are required

Working Conditions:
- A company vehicle is provided for fieldwork; a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required.
- Ability to navigate active construction sites, including walking on uneven terrain, climbing, and occasional lifting or moving of up to 50 pounds.
- Exposure at times to outdoor weather conditions, wet or humid environments, and typical construction-site hazards such as dust, fumes, chemicals, noise, vibration, and in-progress work areas.
- Occasionally, may require extended or irregular hours, including evenings or weekends, to support project demands or respond to unexpected field situations.
- Work is performed in both office and field environments, including time spent reviewing plans, reports, and project documentation.
- Standard schedule is typically a 40-hour workweek, with flexibility for day or night shifts depending on project needs.

Employees will work both in office and outdoor construction environments, sometimes for extended periods, and in varying weather conditions. Office noise levels are generally moderate, while construction sites may be loud and require hearing protection.
