Position Summary
We are seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable Environmental Scientist with an asbestos and hazardous building materials specialty to join our dynamic Environmental team. In this role, you will be responsible for conducting asbestos and lead-based paint inspections, air monitoring, abatement oversight, and reporting in support of a wide variety of environmental projects across multiple sectors.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working in the field and in the office, has a strong understanding of asbestos and lead-based paint regulations and sampling protocols, and enjoys collaborating with both clients and internal teams to deliver compliant, high-quality work. - Conduct asbestos inspections and surveys in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations (including AHERA, NESHAP, OSHA).
- Perform air monitoring, abatement oversight, and clearance sampling for asbestos projects.
- Prepare inspection reports, abatement documentation, and regulatory submittals.
- Assist in the development of abatement design plans and technical bidding specifications.
- Communicate findings, recommendations, and compliance strategies to clients.
- Maintain detailed project documentation and ensure adherence to QA/QC procedures.
- Support other environmental projects, including indoor air quality assessments, lead-based paint inspections, and hazardous materials surveys, as needed.
- Coordinate with project managers, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.
- Stay up to date on evolving asbestos regulations and industry best practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
- Illinois-specific Asbestos Inspector and Asbestos Abatement Design licenses required (or ability to obtain quickly in states where Fehr Graham operates).
- 3–5 years of relevant environmental consulting experience with a strong focus on hazardous building materials-related work.
- Familiarity with applicable regulations (EPA, OSHA, NESHAP, etc.).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently in field settings and travel to project sites.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
