Mechanical Project Manager-Own High-Value HVAC/Plumbing/Fire Protection Projects with Real Autonomy

The Opportunity

With nearly 90 years as a trusted leader in mechanical contracting, our firm has built a reputation in the greater Chicago area for delivering innovative, high-performance solutions in HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, virtual design, prefabrication, modular construction, service, and commissioning. We specialize in creating healthy, comfortable, and safe environments on complex commercial, industrial, healthcare, and institutional projects.

If you're a seasoned mechanical Project Manager tired of excessive oversight, outdated processes, or projects that don't challenge your technical expertise-we're looking for someone like you. We give high-performers significant independence to lead multi-million-dollar mechanical scopes, drive smart value engineering, and represent a premier full-service mechanical operation known for quality and reliability.

The Role: True Ownership & Impact As Project Manager, you'll serve as the primary point of contact for owners, architects, representatives, and governing authorities-running projects up to $5M (or multiple projects totaling that value) with minimal day-to-day supervision.

  • Secure & Optimize the Work : Estimate and bid projects thoroughly-review drawings, specs, vendor proposals, and internal requirements; negotiate competitive pricing and proactively identify value engineering and prefabrication opportunities to present compelling alternatives to clients.
  • Integrate & Add Value : Spot early chances for prefabrication, modular builds, and VE; promote our full suite of mechanical disciplines as seamless project partners.
  • Lead Safety & Field Execution : Create site-specific safety plans and JHAs; maintain a strong on-site presence with a working knowledge of all project scopes (electrical, structural, etc.); own the construction schedule-monitor progress, analyze subcontractor schedules, communicate changes, and resolve delays before they escalate.
  • Control the Process : Expertly handle RFIs, submittals, change orders, pay applications, and field work orders-negotiate changes assertively and navigate complex project requirements (OCIP/CCIP, tax exemptions, certified payroll, diversity goals, etc.).
  • Own Profitability : Maintain deep visibility into job costs, labor metrics, collective bargaining agreements, monthly forecasting, and post-project reviews/lessons learned.
  • Develop Talent : Mentor, train, and delegate to Project Engineers and interns-build a culture of excellence and professional growth.
  • Represent Excellence : Uphold our long-standing reputation through professional relationships, ethical conduct, and clear communication with all stakeholders.

What You Bring- The Mechanical Expert Profile We're seeking proven talent with deep mechanical knowledge, ownership mindset, and the ability to thrive in fast-moving environments.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Building Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or related field (required)
  • 5-10+ years of progressive experience with a mechanical contractor (strong HVAC, plumbing, piping background preferred)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project, PowerPoint); Bluebeam experience a plus
  • Familiarity with Penta and OnBase a plus
  • OSHA 30-Hour Card (required); additional safety certifications highly valued
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical means/methods, change order negotiation, subcontractor/vendor management, and risk mitigation
  • Ability to perform under pressure, multitask, prioritize, and adapt quickly
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills-professional, positive, and relationship-oriented
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, proactive, with strong initiative and ethical awareness
  • Capable of working independently while remaining a collaborative team player

Why Join Us?

  • Longevity + Innovation : Be part of a nearly century-old leader that's still pushing boundaries with virtual design, advanced prefabrication, modular techniques, and healthy building solutions.
  • Genuine Autonomy : Manage substantial projects with real decision-making authority and limited supervision-your expertise directly shapes outcomes.
  • Varied, High-Impact Work : Handle diverse, technically demanding mechanical projects across commercial, healthcare, industrial, and institutional sectors in the Chicagoland area-no monotony here.
  • Professional Development : Mentor emerging talent, contribute to continuous improvement through lessons learned, and grow within a respected, stable organization.
  • Location : Based in the greater Chicago area with convenient access for local professionals.
  • Compensation : Competitive and experience-based (two internal PM levels), with strong benefits in a firm that values its people.
