Multicraft Maintenance Technician - Chemical Processing Operations
Your next challenge
Do you thrive on solving tough equipment problems in a fast-moving plant? Our chemical processing facility in Southwest Chicago (near Midway Airport) needs a multicraft pro to keep production safe and reliable. You’ll support first and second shift coverage with a tight-knit team. Strong electrical competency is required; welding capability is considered a plus. Be ready for mandatory overtime, weekend/holiday work, after-hours call-ins, and schedule adjustments driven by production demands.
Imagine this
A mixer trips a breaker mid-batch. You isolate energy using LOTO, trace the fault on a three-phase circuit, replace a failed component, and get the motor rewired and running. Minutes later, you’re checking a steam trap near the boilers, then updating AMMS with precise notes. Before the day ends, you verify the fire system is in good order and help route new stainless piping to a drum turner.
What you’ll do
- Operate, inspect, and maintain the facility’s fire suppression system.
- Perform electrical diagnostics and repairs: conduit fabrication, motor installs/wiring, and control troubleshooting on three-phase systems.
- Service process equipment—vacuum pumps, drum turners, mixers, boilers, plant steam systems, and compressors.
- Build and maintain process piping; work with hydraulic and pneumatic devices including gauges, valves, and pressure regulators.
- Carry out preventive maintenance: check drives and belts, verify fluid levels, change filters, and complete assigned PM routes.
- Support capital and improvement projects: equipment setting, electrical and piping installs, and commissioning assistance.
- Document all work thoroughly and close out work orders promptly.
- Model safety: follow OSHA standards and plant procedures for hot work, lockout/tagout, PPE, fall protection, and confined space.
- Contribute to facility upkeep—basic carpentry, housekeeping, grounds care, and outdoor tasks in all weather (including snow removal).
- Tackle other duties as needed to keep the plant running.
What it takes
- High school diploma or GED plus a related associate’s degree, trade certificate, or completed apprenticeship from a technical/vocational school or college.
- 2+ years in industrial maintenance; background in chemical processing equipment is preferred (mixers, pumps, steam, fabrication, electrical, welding).
- Solid math skills applicable to maintenance and fabrication work.
- Hands-on experience with hand/power tools, machine tools, and pressure indication instruments.
- Fundamental plumbing and pipefitting capabilities.
- Comfort with computers to access the intranet, AMMS, and online training.
- Certified and confident operating powered industrial trucks—forklifts and scissor lifts.
- Valid driver’s license with a strong driving record for occasional company vehicle use.
- Clear communication in English (spoken, written, and reading) across teams and shifts.
- Collaborative problem solver who drives root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
- Detail-focused, organized, and committed to finishing work accurately and on time.
- Dependable attendance and punctuality.
Physical demands and environment
- Regular reaching and fine hand work; frequent speaking and hearing.
- Positions include standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing, and balancing.
- Lift up to 70 lbs frequently and up to 100 lbs on occasion.
- Vision requirements: near/far, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to refocus quickly.
- Must pass medical clearance and fit-testing to wear a respirator; able to work in confined spaces.
- Exposure to moving machinery and airborne particles; frequent wet/humid areas and electrical shock hazards.
- Occasional work at heights, outdoors, and in extreme temperatures; noise levels vary from quiet to loud.
Compensation and location
Competitive pay and benefits; relocation assistance is not available. Based in SW Chicago near Midway Airport.
