A Tennessee public school kindergarten teacher is primarily responsible for planning, delivering, and assessing effective instruction that aligns directly with the Tennessee State Standards. Operating under the guidelines of the local Board of Education and the Tennessee Department of Education, the teacher creates a foundational, structured classroom environment that supports the academic, social, emotional, and physical growth of young learners.
Core Responsibilities
- Instructional Planning : Design daily lesson plans focusing on early literacy, mathematics, science, and foundational social skills.
- Standards Alignment : Deliver curriculum structured around state learning targets and objectives.
- Differentiated Learning : Adapt teaching methods and materials to accommodate various learning styles, speeds, and developmental gaps.
- Student Assessment : Administer both formal and informal testing to evaluate student competencies and developmental growth.
- Behavior Management : Maintain a safe, welcoming, and well-managed classroom in accordance with the district's Student Code of Conduct.
- IEP & 504 Collaboration : Work with special education professionals to modify lessons and support goals for students with special needs.
- Parent Communication : Maintain ongoing updates with families regarding child safety, progress, and behavioral adjustments.
- Supervision Duties : Maintain direct supervision of children during instruction, transitions, recess, and school meal times.
- Professional Alignment : Participate in faculty meetings, professional development programs, and district workshops.
Job Requirements & Qualifications
- Education : Minimum of a bachelor's degree approved by the state.
- Licensure : An active Tennessee teaching license with an early childhood endorsement (such as a PreK–3 license).
- Testing : Passing scores on required Praxis Core and Elementary Early Childhood assessments.
- Background Check : Clear criminal background screening through finger-printing via the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and FBI.
- Ethics Compliance : Absolute adherence to the Teacher Code of Ethics defined by Tennessee State Law.
Physical & Mental Demands
- Standing or walking for extended classroom periods.
- Bending, kneeling, or sitting on the floor to interact with students at eye level.
- Utilizing high levels of emotional stamina, patience, and clear verbal communication skills.
