Position Overview:
The Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice is looking to hire a highly organized and detail-oriented Licensed Registered Nurse, Corrections Nurse I. This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care to individuals in a congregate care setting. The successful candidate shall possess a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel in a correctional setting.
Essential Functions:
- Under general supervision, provides direct patient care and primary nursing care services.
- Reviews and maintains records.
- Maintains security of medications, medical equipment, and supplies in accordance with facility policies.
- Monitors and maintains compliance of safety and sanitation in patient treatment and examination rooms.
- Reviews medical records and completes health status forms on individuals in custody for transfers to ensure continuation of care.
- Participates in the Quality Assurance Programs through concurrent monitoring of staff compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Requires graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
- Requires completion of the Corrections Nurse Trainee program OR one (1) year of nursing experience (within the last five years) in an acute care setting; preferred experience includes emergency room care, medical/surgical nursing, and/or ambulatory care.
- Requires licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Illinois.
This class title is included as an Upward Mobility Program credential title.
Preferred Qualifications (In Order of Significance):
- Prefers at least one (1) year of nursing experience in a congregate care setting.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in and/or beside mental health.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working in an Urgent Care and/or related setting.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working with a juvenile population.
- Prefers at least one (1) year of experience working on an interdisciplinary team.
- Prefers the ability to multitask.
- Prefers strong communication skills.
