Position Summary

The School of Education and Health Sciences seeks an innovative, collaborative, and experienced faculty and student-centered Chairperson for the Department of Nursing. This is a 12-month appointment open rank faculty position, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will bring demonstrated leadership experience in higher education, along with exceptional skills in strategic planning, faculty development, and interprofessional collaboration. The Chairperson of the Department of Nursing will serve as a dynamic and visionary academic leader, responsible for overseeing the administration, continuous improvement, and academic excellence supporting the School's graduate nursing programs, including the implementation of the recently developed Master's Entry to Nursing Practice (MENP) program.

The Chairperson of the Department of Nursing supports faculty and student success in the pre-licensure and post-MSN licensure programs, including Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing Practitioner (PMHNP), Nurse Educator, and Nurse Executive Leadership masters and certificate programs, ensuring excellence in graduate nursing education and alignment with the AACN Essentials and CCNE accreditation standards.

The candidate will contribute to didactic, laboratory, and clinical instruction; curriculum development; accreditation support; and student mentorship. Faculty teaching responsibilities align with faculty expertise and program needs, including pre-licensure MSN, MSN core courses, and advanced practice content. Additional responsibilities include fostering interprofessional education, maintaining accreditation documentation, and cultivating strong clinical partnerships. Scholarly engagement in social determinants of health, health informatics, health equity, or the scholarship of nursing education is of particular interest. This position is responsible for administrative and teaching service, equivalent to 20 credits over 12 months within the Graduate Nursing Department.

DESCRIPTION OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Note that all functions described below must be performed, and it is usually the responsibility of the individual in this position to perform them or ensure they are performed.
  1. Serve as the senior academic and administrative leader of the Department of Nursing, working collaboratively with the Dean, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost to support departmental goals and align nursing initiatives with institutional strategic priorities.
  2. Support faculty professional growth, faculty workload and teaching assignments, promote faculty scholarship, faculty recruitment, and evaluation.
  3. Fiscal oversight of the departmental operational budget, including budget and enrollment forecasting and management of expenditures to support the resources and daily functioning of the unit.
  4. Teach didactic and clinical graduate nursing courses in pre-licensure and MSN programs, using evidence-based strategies and technology-enhanced learning platforms, such as CANVAS.
  5. Follow the approved course descriptions and syllabi established and approved by the Graduate Nursing Curriculum Committee and the Nursing Department Faculty.
  6. Develop, revise, and implement curriculum consistent with AACN Essentials and CCNE standards, as well as the NONPF standards as applicable.
  7. Enact best practices in nursing education.
  8. Model critical and reflective thinking and foster the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective development of learners.
  9. Support student success through academic advising and student consultation, by appointment.
  10. Provide timely, constructive, and thoughtful feedback to learners.
  11. Use information from course evaluations in planning instruction and improving the process.
  12. Demonstrate professional and educational values and legal/ethical precepts in interactions.
  13. Exhibit a spirit of inquiry about teaching and learning, student development, evaluation methods, and other aspects of the role.
  14. Use current research findings and scholarly works in nursing to improve nursing education and practice
  15. Perform other leadership duties as requested by the Dean of SEHS, the Provost, or the President.
  16. Maintain clinical certification and licensure.

SALARY RANGE
The budgeted salary range for this position is $115,000 to $125,000.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

Education
  • Earned doctoral degree in nursing or a closely related field (PhD, DNP, DNSc, EdD)
  • Master's degree in nursing from an accredited program
Licensure & Certification
  • Active, unencumbered Illinois RN license
  • Certified Nurse Educator, preferred
Experience
  • Minimum of two years of leadership experience in higher education, within a nursing school
  • A distinguished record of teaching, scholarship, and service in nursing education
  • Experience and knowledge in curriculum development and accreditation processes
